That is pretty incredible. Think Sir Edmond Hillary deserves top spot. He climbed Everest in 1953. He was wearing heavy clothing made of wool and cottons. Not the lightweight stuff of today. Dude was a badass.

Climbing Capitain... damn sure an epic physical achievement. I have to say that the Everest climb took some time. There were no ladders over the icefalls, no ropes to hang onto on the way up. No ropes on what is now known as Hillary Step. It was a pretty remarkable long duration physical feat and what he and his 1 sherpa did was truly amazing in my book.

Reaching the summit of any 8k peak is impressive, but Everest isn't the most challenging technical climb at all - just the most sought after because of the superlative nature of it. Plus the sheer logistics of it and now with all the crowds.

Annapurna, K2 and Kangchenjunga are all, no question, tougher. Annapurna is probably the toughest peak in the world (~40% fatality rate for those attempting) and it's barely 8k meters. Even Baintha Brakk, which is under 8000m is as tough as (or tougher than) Everest - only 3 successes to date.

Even our own, modest Mt. McKinley at just under 6200 meters is in Everest's league of difficulty, with only a 50% success rate.

You gotta think he's pissed he didn't get 1:59. I'm sure he lollygagged for a minute somewhere along the way.

All but something like one elephant died during the trip. Still crazy impressive. Hannibal was a bad dude.

Actually, Hannibal didn't lose any elephants crossing the alps.

watched that Free Solo doc last night, and was just looking for some talk on it. Then I saw the poster say that almost none of Hannibal's elephants made it over the alps, and I just happen to be reading a book about Hannibal right now, and so I had to correct him.

Naim "Pocket Hercules" Süleymanoglu was an Olympic champion weight lifter in the 80's and 90's. He stood 4'10" and weighed about 135, and could lift close to 420lbs over his head.
