Exactly. Just because he may have had differing political opinions should not negate the incredible sacrifice he made as a POW. Say what you will about his politics, but McCain was a true American hero.

There are 14 peaks that go above 8,000 meters. Known as the “death zone” no matter your health, training, genetics, whathaveyou, once you enter this zone your body begins to die - the brain and body tissues don’t get enough oxygen, the digestive system shuts down, even staying fully hydrated is nearly impossible.
To date only 40 people have ever climbed all of them, and only 19 have done it without supplemental oxygen.
Ed Viesturs is the only American.
Not a single person nor single event, but the willpower and stamina it must take to accomplish the feat is quite impressive nonetheless.

He also broke the world record for holding his breath. He started going into convulsions while doing it but managed to keep himself under water and break the record. It may have been broken since then.

Finishing a dump in under 5 minutes with a smartphone in hand.

That was amazing, but I still gotta go with either the old school rock climbers, first guy to top Everest, or first to the Poles.

All but something like one elephant died during the trip. Still crazy impressive. Hannibal was a bad dude.

Climbing all 14 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. It's a very small club and still has been accomplished by only one American (with or without supplemental oxygen).

Lance is amazing too regardless of the drug use. The story behind Greg actually surviving is crazy. A guy he was with had just got one of the first cell phones in production. Guy called 911 and they sent a helicopter to pick him up. Without the cell phone Greg would have died for sure. Also interesting to think about how the two greatest American cyclists of all time both had near death experiences. And unfortunately they both hated each other. That’s all on Lance though.

The Mountain carrying a 1400 pound log for 5 steps
As difficult as that was, what is the point of carrying a log about a foot and a half in five steps with no danger of it falling on you?

I’d highly recommend “No Shortcuts to the Top” by Ed Viesturs. He talks about his journey to climb all 14. Great book.
