Most economical way to listen to audible books?

I just tried to "buy" a book off of amazon, and it seems to force you to join their Audible app, which is either 7.99 (Plus) or 15.99 (PremiumPlus) monthly.
I'd really rather just buy the book for $15 and listen to it with no monthly subscription.
Suggestions?

The $15/month includes a credit for an audiobook so it pays for itself if you use it.
And once you join, you can buy 3 credits for like $30 iirc, so you end up saving on audiobooks.

Look into Libby app...
You get the books through local libraries, so sometimes there's a wait for what you want. That's the biggest drawback

Our local library gives you access to Cloud Library with a lot of stuff you can listen to for free.

My wife uses Libby. As has been pointed out, it works like a brick-and-mortar library. If a book is "checked out" you have to wait until it gets "returned." But other than that, she's been happy with it.

I use Cloud Library. It is free and attached to my Library Card.

You should be able to rent them from the library for free. The name of the app that St Tammany Parish uses to stream their audio books us called Hoopla

I just resign up for audible everytime I want a book and then pause/cancel the subscription until the next time I need one, which is only for road trips.
You get a 30 day free trial, so if you use your regular email address, the next time you can use your TD email, and then a work one. Lots of free trials.

Libby
Hoopla
Kanopy (not books)
Audible sounds great in theory as it has basically everything in audio format. Random history books etc.
Problem is, almost zero of that comes with the base subscription from what I could tell and was frustrating as frick.
Oh cool, they have it. Click through, nope need a credit. Ok what about...nope frick you need a credit.

Waiting is a drawback but my cheap arse is ok with that. I'll find something else to listen to in the mean time.

I just buy them. The books I listen to on audio are generally longer and drier so it takes me a while to finish them. Tried the library app but I never finished them in time and would have to wait to check them out again. Like you said the pay app isn't worth it unless you are getting through the 2 books a month that come with it.

I did the $15 monthly subscription
You get the book you really want plus the access to all
The other free books and the free Great courses as well ( I really enjoyed a bunch of those )
It was worth it for sure

It’s been a few years , so not sure if it still works, but you used to be able to log in to someone else’s audible account, download books to your phone, then log back into your account and they were still available.
Wife and I have had the annual subscription for about 8 years and have a huge audible library because when they have a sale you can pick up titles cheap and not waste credits.

Your library’s website. You can usually download your local library’s audiobook app online from their website and get stuff from surrounding parish libraries too.
They also have hard copy stuff at the branches.

Libby is by Overdrive. Overdrive is what the Army, and maybe some other government organizations, uses and provides all employees. I had access to it for years and loved it for audiobooks, as well as digital text books. I lost that connection a while back and have been looking for something to replace it. I'll look into this one.

Google podcast app is what I've been using the past year. I've found every book I've searched for and it's free
