I had gotten off the subway and saw a middle-eastern looking mom and kid along the steps. I have an infant now and seeing homeless kids on the street just hits me different now.
Congratulations, you got scammed by gypsies.

That's fine -- it was worth it to me knowing I at least tried to help. Not as if I overextended myself.

I truly hope that mom and little girl were in the situation you thought they were, but that’s the problem. Good-natured people like you (and me if I’m being honest) perpetuate pan-handling and scammers because we want to believe we’re helping, but we almost never are and there’s a good chance we’re causing harm.
It’s really best to give money to an organization you trust who will actually talk to people and make sure they have legitimate needs.

$23….I had a $20 wrapped inside the singles and forgot about it. Baw begging didn’t even get off his arse to grab the cash, he just made me reach further. I am still pissed about that one.

In Birmingham, during a festival called City Stages in 2001, a black guy came up to me on the other side of the gate that enclosed the parking lot.
I gave him $30.00 for his honesty.
He told me he had been asking for money all day by telling people he was wanting food. He said he lied it was to buy a bottle of alcohol.
He said he got his bottle of alcohol but then got his arse beat by other homeless people and they stole his bottle of alcohol.
So he said I’m asking for any change you have so I can buy some alcohol .
The guy was beat up way bad too, swollen and bloody.
So I gave him $30 and off he went to get drunk.

A sock full of nickels traveling through the air at about 42 MPH

I've never given cash. I did put about $25 of gas in the car or a guy asking for help at a gas station. Said he was a Vietnam vet who has been disabled by stepping on a landmine. Normally I'd be suspicious, but:
There is a large VA hospital in that town.
He was the right age.
when I was considering it he rolled up a pants leg, the scaring was damn ugly.
Filling up his tank was the least I could do.

Congratulations on wasting your money and supporting their lifestyles.
People like you are the exact reason we have so many beggars on every corner.
___________
Thanks for making my point about shallow minded people.

Who are you to judge? There are some legitimate homeless / down on their luck folks. God is good to me everyday and He calls on us to help others. I’d rather do the right thing and let God sort it out. If the shoe were on the other foot, you’d want someone helping you.

I used to keep a ton of ones in my ashtray and give them out to every one with a sign. But then I started to realize it was the same people day in and day out and this was there job. They aren't liking for help they are looking for a handout and an easy drug filled life.
So now I just ignore them all and donate to St Jude and wounded Warriors.

A Redwing.
One guy carrying a gas can asking for money for gas I told him to put the can on the tailgate and pretending to look for change I drove off and stole his can. Use it for my mixed gas to this day.

I went and bought a bum a bag of chips once, at a gas station. He had asked me at the pump if I had any food, I said, "No, but I got a couple bucks on me." and he told me, "If you give me money I'm just gonna spend it on beer, I'm just really hungry right now." So, went in and got him the chips.
