DONALDSONVILLE — The Mosaic Company is cutting parts of its workforce at two of its Louisiana facilities due to ongoing sulfur supply constraints affecting phosphate fertilizer production.

Company spokespeople said in a prepared statement that global sulfur supply constraints and “extraordinary market conditions” led to the decision to reduce portions of its workforce at its Uncle Sam and Faustina facilities, located in Donaldsonville and Convent.

It’s currently unclear how many workers were let go by the company on Wednesday. A WARN notice did not appear to be filed with state officials.

According to the company’s website, with more than 500 employees and contractors in Louisiana, the company is one of the largest employers in St. James Parish.

Ammonia production at Faustina continues uninterrupted during the idling of phosphate operations. Company officials noted the challenge was previously disclosed in its Q2 earnings release and discussed during its earnings call.

The company also plans to pursue opportunities to resume full operations as market conditions improve, according to officials.

Hmm. It’s a mystery. Probably doesn’t have anything to do with that war with Iran that was only going to last six weeks.

Letterkenny: “To be fair….”

Mosaic has been sucking wind for quite some time now. Maybe the issues in the Strait aren’t helping, but I was surprised to hear a couple years ago they had plans for expansion at one of their Mississippi River plants.

Sometime I think corporations use an excuse like this to layoff employees. Blaming layoffs on supply chains or whatever softens the negative blowback on them. Even though they really don't need an excuse.
