More than half of the world’s population will be overweight or obese by 2035 without significant action, according to a new report.

The World Obesity Federation’s 2023 atlas predicts that 51% of the world, or more than 4 billion people, will be obese or overweight within the next 12 years.

Rates of obesity are rising particularly quickly among children and in lower-income countries, the report found.

Describing the data as a “clear warning,” Louise Baur, president of the World Obesity Federation, said that policymakers needed to act now to prevent the situation worsening.

“It is particularly worrying to see obesity rates rising fastest among children and adolescents,” she said in a statement.

The cost to society is significant as a result of the health conditions linked to being overweight, the federation said: more than $4 trillion annually by 2035, or 3% of global GDP.

One of the few topics where I tend to lean with the Dims. Quality of food available at affordable prices is terrible. I made a conscious effort to eat healthy a few years ago and switched to mostly single ingredient items and cooking for myself/family. It’s expensive. Walmart and even Target lack quality produce and meats. Sams and Costco have better quality but then you’re buying in bulk. There’s also more effort and time involved with cooking for yourself and eating healthy. It’s a triple whammy.

First step I would take as government would be to restrict the use of food stamps significantly to healthier options. People on welfare should not be able to also get fat on the taxpayer dollar and end up costing us far more in healthcare costs long term. Sorry I don’t believe in your freedom of choice if you can’t fend for yourself

Because the market size isn’t there. If there was a sizable portion of the population interested in it, you can guarantee there would be more options and at better pricing

I grew up on that government food. You used to have to go to a “food pantry” and could only get certain items. People bitched, so they started doing the cards but had to buy unprepared foods. People bitched some more, so now they allow just about anything in the store. Will not be surprised if we see fast food restaurants accepting food stamps in our lifetime

Good, I’ll be cleaning up on chicks.

Except, I’ll be 73 and they’ll all be fat!

At least with respect to our society:

Your health insurance ought to reflect higher premiums if you choose to be obese because you are going to pose a disproportionate strain on the healthcare system.

We ought to subsidize healthier foods and condemn false marketing practices like whatever made people believe Gatorade’s flavored sugar and salt water is healthy or that sugary cereal is healthy because it’s “part of a balanced breakfast”

We need more walkable cities and a society that encourages going outside.

And this body positivity, “healthy at any size” movement needs to just die. It’s lying to people.

I won’t be one of them.

Gentlemen: look up your ideal weight and get there. Life is so much better when you’re healthy.

The easier life gets the fatter everyone gets. Mix that with really shitty food quality, lack of exercise, and sedentary lifestyle and you have all our modern health problems summed up.

All of this is preventable but people are lazy and make excuses

Most humans have been left behind by the speed of advancement. They use it for vain, empty purposes.

Increased wealth would probably destroy the bottom 50% of the population.

Poor people are more likely to eat too much. Imagine going back in time and telling folks that.
