The state has put a hold on my license and fined me $656, because it said in March of 2020 I didn't have car insurance on one vehicle for 14 days.
I'm pretty sure I switched policies at that time and doubt I went without insurance. But even if I did go without insurance for two weeks the fine seems really high.
I have to pay a reinstating fee. What makes no sense is is only in one vehicle and I had three cars at the time. So if the other two were insured all three should have been.
But I can't figure out how to check my insurance coverage from 4 years ago.
Can I get a lawyer and fight this? Or should I just spread Vaseline on my a-hole and take it?

I hate the stupid OMV.

Wait if you don’t have insurance they take away your drivers license? How does half of this state drive?

Probably on a suspended license.

Like LaFonta says in his latest commercial, “need to have unshored motaress…”

You call your insurance company you had 4 years ago and ask them. It’s called a letter of experience.

Is not taken away. It's blocked from being renewed. I was going to get an endorsement and I checked the status first and it came up as blocked. . I mean I think it's a good thing people are fined who don't have insurance but I had insurance.
I switched from Progressive to Geico that month.

I emailed them just now asking for this but I see the state says the account has been turned over to collections. I don't remember seeing any mail from the omv but they are dating they mailed a letter a few years ago.

Tell them you’re here illegally. They’ll apologize and send you a check.

They make it a pain when you switch insurance companies. I’ve just gone through it as well. Call your insurance company and ask for a “Letter of Experience.” Go to the express lane.org website and upload the letter, along with the coverage you had on the supposed lapse date. The OMV should respond within the week. Keep fighting it. I eventually got mine taken care of without paying the fees but it was a headache.

The last two accidents I have been involved in has been caused by uninsured drivers. I'm required to carry uninsured drivers insurance. Total bullshite.

Wonder if they get the same bill... Im in NC. One of the dude's insurance ended up not paying because there was no police report. The officer said we only needed to do an info swap. Simple rear end accident.

Get a report. shite insurance companies will do shite things.

March of 2020
The beginning of the COVID shutdowns.

Weren't there some moratoriums on services then due to government ordered quarantines?

Blame that.

Is it possible that when you switched companies they only had 2 of your vehicles at first and then you added the 3rd one later after noticing it wasn't on there? Does that ring a bell?

Anyways, you'd have to call the company you were with that month and get a letter of experience or your declarations page when you started the policy to show you had coverage on the vehicle on that date.

As far as the fine seeming high, I just looked it up and it's $125 for a lapse of 11-30 days, but maybe since it was 4 years ago it might be a late fee?

March of 2020 was when covid lockdowns started and insurance companies put moratoriums on cancellations anyways so it could just be a database error because things were so fricky at that time.

More and more municipalities are going to “no reports” unless injury.

But this is why you have insurance. File through your own carrier and let them fight it out.

The state should be held to a statute of limitations on things like this.

If they don’t call you out for four years, they should be shite out of luck for making a big deal out of it.

I mean it simply doesn't allow you to renew your license until it's resolved. So there is a set date for it - your license renewal date. They do mail out letters when it initially happens though. But it's not uncommon for people to have different mailing addresses than what's on their license so if that's the case they wouldn't get the letter. Plus as previously stated, it was the beginning of covid so the mail was fricky like everything else was.

Your insurance company has to send you a letter to describe the scenario. You take that to show they may have been at fault. I had a one day lapse at one time and I had to do that. Insurance company cancelled my GMC Yukon instead of my GMC Sierra that I sold. Miscommunication.

I’m told by the sheriffs, news and plaintiffs bar uninsured motorists are the reason for Louisiana’s current insurance crisis.

Its a fricking scam ran by the state. Back when I had multiple cars and motorcycles I would switch insurance pretty regularly and they did this shite to me claiming one bike wasn't insured for a day and one car was lapsed a day. Even with letters from insurance companies I had to pay a few hundred to get reinstated, it is also like pulling teeth getting a letter from the insurance company you had four years ago, they DGAF.

I got jammed up with those sumbitches, for an insurance lapse of 2 mins! Cost me close to $300. Switching insurance companies, old one cancelled at 23:59 and new one started at 00:01 (two mins later).
