Missoula is the place to avoid, it's like mini-Portland. Homeless people and weirdos everywhere in the warmer months, and it's weird for the sake of weird which is...fine, but not my thing, and probably not yours either. I was in Portland last week and can draw a lot of direct comparisons.
Bozeman will hopefully steer clear of that fate as it grows. There's enough red votes, farmers and blue collar folks here in the rest of the Gallatin Valley that I think most of the insanity will stay away.
You may want to consider the Kalispell/Polson/Big Fork area around Flathead Lake, up north by Glacier NP. Very laid-back and conservative towns, heavier Christian influence than any other larger metro area in Montana. Absolutely beautiful there as well.

Actually Yellowstone is in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.

The demographic that lives up there isn't really the reproducing type

Give it ten years. Montana and Idaho will be the next states overrun with refugees from California.

The large landowners in Montana are a mixed bag of cowboys, billionaire oilmen and Ted Turner.
State gets more like a big sky version of Austin every minute.

I couldn’t imagine being like that for months at a time.

Helena MO is already Austin, and more and more people making up the state government have the same liberal mindset.
