They have a couple of antique places downtown that are interesting.

All Monroe needs is a little love to be a jewel of a town. It's not too far gone, yet.
Not so sure about this. Decades of Democratic leadership have taken its toll along with loss of industry. It can be argued that one of these has contributed to the other. Unfortunately, demographics do not suggest a change is imminent.

I lived in Monroe for 3 years near the campus and thought it was a nice community.

I live here and i love it. OP mentions the two most run down places in town (like every town in the south has). There are still really nice places to live around really good people. I lived in BR several years and spent a lot of time in other places, and id rather be here. I make enough money that i can travel when and where i want to go. I enjoy having Monroe as my home base.
I can understand the "Monroe sucks" narrative if you are single and in your 20's. This place is probably not the best for you if you need the action of a bigger city. I completely get that.
If you are in the married 30-40s crowd (which i am) it is a great place to be if you live on the right side of town. There are a lot of people in this demographic. My kids go to A rated public schools. There are lots of young like minded professionals. Per capita, we really do have better restaurants than we actually deserve. There is some young blood that is actually trying to revitalize things downtown (new restaurants, bars, businesses).... and its actually working.
All that being said, crime is a real issue....... mostly contained on the southside but also makes its way to the northside. New leadership is absolutely needed.

It's Jamie Mayo now. The worst thing that happened to Monroe was the passing of Mayor Melvin Rambin. He defeated Abe Pierce, and Jamie Mayo became governor after his death. Monroe would have been a stellar city today had Rambin lived.

Is the zoo still open in N Richwood?
75% of the states population lives on or below I-10 as does the economic engine of Louisiana. Don't ever see S-port or Funroe ever being more than they are now.

Something has to give on the I20 corridor and someone has to come out ahead. If I were put down a bet today I would put my money on Ruston being the economic engine in that area in the next 20 years. The new mayor they have along with the current administrations in Monroe and Shreveport put them in the driver's seat IMHO for any new or developing opportunities that may come up in the next decade+.

Yes, the new mayorial candidate is a popular north-side guy who owns a small business over here. He's a good man. However, the "issue" will be demographics and turnout. Sadly, that is how it is.

Yes the Zoo is still there and open. Also, they have brought back the train ride again. The kids love it, as do adults that rode it as kids.

Check out the SuperWalmart in Bastrop, LA. It's freakin huge. Rumor is Walmart mixed up the building plans. The plans were to be for Bastrop, Tx but mistakenly was built in Bastrop, LA. Oh and visit Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop, it's comparable to any Bass Pro Shop.

The only Fortune 250 company (and only one of two in the Fortune 500) headquartered in Louisiana is in Monroe.

And if you guys want some good food the south side has some great stuff. Boudain, tamales, fried fish, big mammas, etc. Lots of unhealthy but good stuff.

Leaving. This real estate market sucks arse here too. Thanks CenturyLink. I moved back here for a job that ended up crashing and burning so back to the O&G capital of the world.
