I think it looks good on the shirts ive seen but I don't think I'd spend money on it. Would wear one if given as a gift. I've never thought it was tacky/pretentious/narcissistic

I have a couple of white button down dress shirts with my initials monogrammed on the pocket. I've always liked it. Don't really see anything pretentious about it. Monogrammed cuffs are pretty cheesy though IMO.

Practically Every button down shirt I own is monogrammed. It's the right thing to do. Be aware of your audience when you ask these questions. Most of these guys work in plants or on hue land and probably don't even have to shave daily let alone wear a suit and tie to work.

I have two.
Both are company dress shirts I wear at the ASTI conventions.
My logo on my chest, and my initials on my sleeves.
I only got that because it was free from the embroiderer.

I don't care enough to do that on a dress shirt for going out purposes.

So the way you do it is cool, but the same thing on a different part of the shirt is cheesy?

No, I wear nice clothing, live in one of America's largest business hubs, and travel quite a bit. I rarely see them anywhere.

Not pretentious or tacky. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. If you like monogrammed shirts, wear them. Btw, the monogrammed cuffs are very nice.

Its big with lawyers, egos and whatnot.

I have several monogrammed shirts and here is my rule.

I never, never wear a monogramed shirt with a tie or any shirt (polo) with a design on it with a tie.

Just shirt and slacks at the office then ok.

It depends on the location of the monogram. There are definite reasons to have your shirts monogrammed. Number 1, if you use a dry cleaner and a shirt gets misplaced, there isn't much debate about how to determine your shirt. Second, if you travel a lot and ever forget a shirt behind in a hotel, there isn't much debate its yours. But you can have a shirt monogrammed in locations that are not readily visible to everyone that will serve these purposes.

Monograms on the pocket or on the cuff are simply someone trying to signify their status to others. They serve no other purpose than to advertise that they paid a little extra for a monogram or that the shirt itself was custom made. If that's the signal you want to send, then go for it. If you want to use it for something other than for show then pick one of the many places on a shirt that will be hidden when you wear a sport coat or jacket and you'll be fine.
