I agree which raises interesting ethical questions. Is it humane to keep the child in a perpetual state of agony just to keep it alive?

People with healthy children have no idea how easy they have it.

On one hand I can understand trying to keep the kid alive, on the other hand it sounds like it is insanely painful for the child to live. There are no good choices, only bad ones. frick.

Will his condition improve as he gets older or is this his life forever?

Yeah, cause God forbid your sensitive eyes...or that you're presented with what some parents and children have to go through. The horror that your eyes have seen!

For those who don't want to click the link the condition is called Harlequin ichthyosis. Don't go to the wiki page to learn more either.

Is this a condition that can be diagnosed in the womb? Because if so, I agree with you on the abortion part. I am very anti-abortion, but would not blame the mother one bit if that is the route she chose. It must be absolutely heartbreaking taking care of this child and seeing him in pain. I mean I teared up just seeing the pictures.

Are his internal organs affected as well? Reason I ask is that the skin is in some ways developmentally like all the 'surfaces' of the lungs, of the windpipe, stomach etc.
Or is just (just is NOT the right word) limited to surfaces exposed to light or air or ???

This is why I believe abortion should never be illegal.

This is an absolutely terrible and cruel standard of living that no one should live through.

It would've been absolutely humane to allow him to depart from this world early in his life peacefully.

I don't know where I fall, but I dont think this situation applies. I haven't done any research but it sounds like this disease is curable and the kid can grow up and live a normal healthy life. If so, I think keeping the kid alive is the right ethical choice to make

There is no cure.

I saw a couple articles where people grew up with this disease...but it's not like they didn't look extremely different than other people.

ETA: I cared for a baby lonnnnng ago in BR that had a skin condition kinda similar to this. His skin was very thick in kinda like scales all over his body. He skin looked kinda like reptilian. Your heart just broke for the poor little guy.

The article made it seem like it was. What type of life are these people looking at going forward? Are they just in pain constantly? Or does it get to the point where they can manage the disease
