Find a wife at SLU that’s 10 years younger than you.

Hammond, USA.
Could do a lot worse.

I am truly sorry. Look on the bright side: you aren’t moving to Da Berry.

Downtown is one of the better downtowns in the state. A lot of revitalization over the last 15 years. 99% occupancy rate for commercial buildings. Good restaurants, bars, shops, etc. Living around the college is great, can walk to the parks or downtown, take in some of the baseball games, football, etc.
Hammond west is soon start revitalization as well. Iowa district has had great success with theirs as well.
Hammond gets a lot of hate, but it really is a nice place to live. Only real downside is public schools if you have kids. Always go private.

I visited Hammond several times to hang out with some high school buddies that attended SLU, and it didn't seem that bad. Is this a situation similar to the board's opinion of Slidell, where the city isn't particularly great, but is still better than 80% of the other towns in Louisiana?

My son and his friends like Red White and Brew.
Several good restaurants downtown.
Mariners Inn has live music regularly.
Easy access to two major cities without the hassle of driving there every day.

Hammond is crap. Live in Madisonville and drive 25 minutes.
This is terrible advice.

It’s not as entirely bad as some might think. At least not anymore. Actually has a downtown that you can bar hop. The other posters are correct in that a significant amount of money has flowed into that area in the last 4-8 years. If I were in your shoes I’d get a place downtown, you can live very well.
I used to live in Madisonville. Being in my early 30’s, I was the only person in my neighborhood who was single and didn’t have a kid. As soon as you cross the parish line from Tangi to St. Tammany home prices go up $50k.

I’ve lived in Hammond area since 08. It’s a great location as you’re right on the corridor of two interstates and you’re basically under an hour from anywhere in south Louisiana.
Downtown is a cool place this time of year (normally). Always something going on and lots of live music at venues outdoors on the weekends. You’ve got all the creature comforts.

Hammond is decent
You have a choice in social activity from hanging out at Prop Stop and Tin Lizzies on the weekend, Staying late and trying to pick up sunburned divorced or soon to be divorced women. Or civilized activity in downtown Hammond which has some decent fare.

It’s not a bad place to live as a college student. I enjoyed living there when I attended Southeastern. It’s a decent little city but I wouldn’t want to live there now.

16 years in Hammond USA
it has everything I need for day to day living while remaining a small town with no hassle and no traffic. If OP is familiar with towns in MS he will instinctively know which places to avoid

I've no idea what the LGBBQT community does for fun except get angry at people for perceived slights, so I can't help.

Just go to the crescent every thursday and saturday and you can find an OT 3 ready for action

I lived there for a few years while in college. Granted it was over 15 years ago, but I really enjoyed it there. I could live in one of those old houses just south a campus and probably enjoy life pretty easily

Really enjoyed living in downtown Hammond a couple years ago. Everything is within walking distance, plenty of good eats in the area, and like many have said, Crescent is the best dive bar around. Try Bradys on Thursday for steak night, .60 wings at Coop DeVille on Mondays or Wednesdays, and plenty of women go to 113 for brunch on Sat/Sun.
