Are you doing this every single date for a year? The folks surveyed in the OP are saying they're doing $170+ for every single date in a year (an average of 8 dates).

they're almost certainly not counting every meal outside of their homes as a "date"

eta: there's definitely some semantics and/or generational divide going on in regards to defining a "date"

I’m married so dates are few and far between, but we easily can spend $300 if you factor in a good tip.

Going to a restaurant for drinks then end up ordering food is typical

And expensive. Which is fine. Just don't complain about the expensive option being expensive. (Not saying you were)

And my scenario assumes you've spent some time getting to know each other chatting and then sized each other up at a neutral location.

So when you ask them out you say let’s go to the target parking lot and chat? I don’t do coffee dates because there’s 0 chance of physically escalating

It’s gotta be, “let’s get drinks Friday” she’ll say yes and you have the neutral meeting at the bar over drinks. Then she’s hungry and you’re spending at least $120

I don't know how much dating cost in the mid 1980s but it wasn't cheap, I remember that. I knew I had a keep on the second date with my soon to be wife when I asker her where she wanted to eat and she timidly replied "I have some Arby coupons from the Sunday paper". Like music to my ears...I was fricking around with another one at the time who just the weekend before caused me to use a credit card for the first time at a red lobster cause she just had to have a lobster and ate about 1/2 a bite of it...Arby coupons? Yes please!

Huh

I think the opposite.

You can't leave a good restaurant these days for less than 100, and it'll probably be closer to 150 at least.

First date if its someone you actually may like you should likely spend 150-200

If you're now dating someone regularly dates can get more casual

My wife and I have date night regularly and we don't spend anywhere close to that. Nice dinner, maybe a movie or drinks and some dancing???? Maybe $120. $150....and unless one of them is a gold digger ordering the most expensive shite I guarantee you neither of us holds back, we gonna eat LOL.

Agree with this. Every date? No way. But the first one is going to cost you

That’s probably the way to go. Don’t pick a place that has food if you want to feel it out first

If I'm a woman, no way in hell I'm going to your house on the first date after a cup of coffee.

Three of my wife's friends used the dating apps. All three wouldn't consider anyone who wanted to meet over coffee and such. All three were attractive, single and middle aged.

All three have a good shot of ending up saggy, single and old.

Any woman who wants you to buy them more than a drink/cup of coffee just to meet and talk should be a hard pass.

Couple dates in? Sure take her to a nice steak house. But I’m not spending $200 just to talk to you.

I've had more expensive dates in the quad on a Tuesday.

What woman in 2023 with every true crime show out there….is going to a man’s house on a first date??

I don’t need expensive or over the top first dates. Learned the hard way that an expensive restaurant on a first date is RED FLAG CITY from a guy
