Every date in a casual dating situation shouldn't be a $170+ dinner. That's just a stupid expectation.

doesn't say anything about "casual", "first", or "every"

This lines up with what respondents estimate a good date should cost: $196, but one in eight expect to spend even more, at least $300, on each date night.

I see not benefit for spending this kind of money on a date

Depends on the talent pool and where you live

I would not spend 220 if I lived in Slidell or Picayune. Some busted ran through high school grad with 2 or 3 kids working at circle k

Living in Honolulu, between the local Filipina, Korean, or Japanese crowd or the tourists that come in from all over including Australia, Europe...220 to smash what some of you guys would spend 20 dollars a month to subscribe to on OF...I'd say worth it

I mean that isn’t far off for the majority of restaurants these days. Bldg 5? Easy to spend $200

Can’t get out of superior for less than $120 with just a couple margs

Shoot, even that will run you. $30 for 2 standard cocktails + tip and $50 or so for a standard bottle of wine and cooking food

When I was on hinge, first dates were only coffee or one drink

A survey of 2,000 general population Americans looked at the cost of dating and relationships within the past year — the average respondent has gone on eight dates in the past six months, costing $189 each.

Again, that's just absurd. If you're dating someone over the span of a year, you shouldn't be spending that every date. If you're dating multiple people you shouldn't be spending that every date.

People are clearly just not very creative or resourceful.

maybe after a couple of dates...but first date...no way. Now this was an NYP article so maybe up there that is common I dunno.

meh. it's 2023. a decent dinner and some wine is going to be well over $100.

Each? I'm looking at Morts Steakhouse near me, and most cuts are around 60 bucks. Let's even argue 2 drinks, tax, and tip and you're getting over 100 each. I wouldn't think Morts or it's price level is where most people are going for dates.

If they are, insane.

Depending on what you are cooking, the night you described is $100 at least.

3 for me from Chilis = $20 after tax and tip
$20 x 2 = $40
Upgrade the soft drink to wine = $6
$6 x 2 = $12

Out on a good date for $52

I make it even a better date cause I have the free chips and queso reward coupon too!!!

What about SoLou?

Crab dip $20
Chicken and waffles $22
Shrimp and grits $27
4 cocktails: $52
——
$145 with 20% tip

3 drinks a piece or moving to a bar for another one and you’re at the $170 mark in the article

If she fricks on the first date, the cost doesn’t matter

I thought we were looking for a nice date? You want cheaper? Meet her at the grocery store, scope each other out, make sure you are comfortable and there is some chemistry.

Pick out some appetizer stuff and stuff for an inexpensive meal you know how to cook.

Cheap Bottle of wine or what have you.

Movie at prospective destination, have fun cooking.

The point is make the meal and prep an activity all its own and enjoy it.

Plus you'll get to see if she has any cooking skills

A nice dinner out and drinks will run $175-$300. Especially if hitting a bar after dinner.

I was thinking along the lines of a Superior or Solou like Proximo said. A steakhouse will obviously be a lot more.

This is not realistic and most girls would find it weird. Going to a restaurant for drinks then end up ordering food is typical

Are you doing this every single date for a year? The folks surveyed in the OP are saying they're doing $170+ for every single date in a year (an average of 8 dates).

Three of my wife's friends used the dating apps. All three wouldn't consider anyone who wanted to meet over coffee and such. All three were attractive, single and middle aged.
