Check transmission linkage.
Could be just a solenoid going out. Replace all if this is it.
Any noise at all or just the engine revving?
No check engine light?
Any recent work done on the vehicle?

This thread is what I love the most about the OT

You probably ask AI you're leading the computers start to control us it's probably going to make him crash his car because the machines are starting to take over that's how the computers win

No I don’t ask AI. I have experience.

This.
Run a scan for misfires. Cheap and simple check before you bring to transmission shop.

Sometimes when certain things are wrong with a transmission you can shift out of drive into low gear or reverse and they will move. If you check fluid level engine off vs engine on and the level doesn't change the pump has failed and it won't move in any gear..

Sounds like it's way more serious than a can of additive can fix. Make sure you take to a reputable repair shop. I've read horror stories about some of the local (Baton Rouge) transmission shops.

Anybody has shop recommendations with good experience?

I would find a reputable independent repair shop (not the dealer) and have them diagnose it. I would choose a Jasper rebuild replacement over someone rebuilding it in house (warranty and resale).

Whomever you get to fix the trans, find someone to delete the cylinder deactivation. That's the main source of alll those GM transmissions.Prematurely wears out the converter. My best friend is a former service manager at a GMC dealer and his master tech told him that when his went out. Did a rebuild and a tune and zero problems since.

2017 Tahoe
Torque converter has come apart. Happened in my 16 Silverado and my wife’s 17 Tahoe. If you bring it to dealership, you’ll get the same shitty torque converter. If you bring it to a good transmission shop, you can get a better one and save about $2,000.

Mine developed a shudder at 90,000 miles (Chevy Colorado) and a transmission guy changed the fluid and filter and fixed it right up.
I don't remember exactly but I'm thinking around $600. A relative who has one of those warranties had the same issue with his and he replaced the transmission. I don't want to even think about what a new transmission would run.

Is there an Aamco in town? Most of their dealers are held to a decent standard vs indie shops, where you have no idea what you will get. Might be great, might not.
They all source both the rebuild kits and the complete rebuilt transmissions from the same handful of places. The only difference is the caliber of the builder if it's built at the shop, and most shops no longer do builds in-house. Your install is not complicated at all, no shop should have trouble with it. They just need to be darned sure to flush the cooling lines properly.
If you do go with an in-house build, look for shops with hot rods in the parking lot. Guys who build performance transmissions will know more of the tips and tricks for building a good trans, and the transmission in your truck will be something they see a lot of because it is used in so many applications.
WRT to using a Chevy dealer, just don't. They also get their rebuilt transmissions from the same sources - ATC in OK City, Jasper, etc - and there is no such thing as a "NEW" transmission. ALL "factory" warranty transmissions, unless the transmission itself is an all-new design that has just been on the market a few months, are rebuilds. ATC used to have the contract for 2/3rds of the automakers selling in N America, foreign and domestic. Not sure who's doing it these days.

I don’t really need to read anything else. Yes. Especially if it’s the 8 speed. The 6 speed is a little better, but the transmissions on the 14-18 GMCs are always issues.
If you haven’t serviced that transmission in 164k miles then it’s probably toast. What does the transmission fluid smell like when you checked it. And what color is it.

Transmission probably shite itself. Best of luck.
