Rio Blaze Destroys Most of 20 Million Museum Relics

LINK

quote:

One of Brazil’s biggest cultural treasures, the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, has gone up in flames, leaving little more than a charred ruin behind.

The blaze destroyed most of the 20 million items in the 200 year-old institution, including Egyptian mummies, dinosaur replicas and one of the oldest human skeletons found in the Americas, local media reported. A meteorite on display in the museum, however, was found intact.

The tragedy is the latest blow to a city that has been suffering from the fallout of the country’s worst recession on record. From health to education and security, public services have deteriorated sharply, at one point forcing the closure of the Rio de Janeiro state university.

According to press reports, several of the museums’ fire hydrants and extinguishers weren’t functioning properly. The museum had temporarily closed down in 2015 for lack of funding.

Brazil is having political problems right now. Any chance this was intentional?

I would say it's likely. There's no way you have a museum like that without a high tech fire suppression system

Which have to be maintained and tested. Which I doubt they did. The article says it didn’t function. Those sprinkler systems are like dams. They actually require a lot of service/testing and unmaintained ones fail all the time, which is why commercial property insurance companies will cancel your arse if you don’t send them a current inspection certificate.

That required commercial inspection certificate: proves that private industry will get it right without govt regulations.

Was talking to the gf about the fire this morning. It's a huge shame all of this stuff got burned. She said that Brazil had been in shambles politically and socially, but we both agreed that they'd be fine as long as the chicks kept their bubble butts

I’m not going to lie, if that’s my museum, I’m smuggling the meteorite out of the embers and filing an insurance claim.

Maybe hollow it out and make a chandelier or a bowling ball or something.

There have been electrical wiring issues for years and the museum has not been taken care of and maintained by the government at all.

You can blame the olympics for a large part of this.

It’s a space rock that came through the atmosphere burning at thousands of degrees.

Did they think a building fire was gonna do something to it?
