I took my kids to the BR Zoo last week. It's very sad to see the state of the zoo and the potential it has.
Moving it is a complete waste of money and pandering to the whiteflight.

The location is the main reason. No one wants to drive to shitty Baker.
Move the zoo to a better area, spend the money to make it nice, and it will prosper.

not necessarily. If the desired improvements can be made at a lower cost via a new location as opposed to the existing one, then its not really a waste of money. I can see BREC opting to go invest in a new facility as opposed to putting money into the old one. Especially if the old infrastructure is obsolete.

Just get rid of it altogether. I can drive a bit farther and go to the Audubon Zoo. I have no need to subsidize that dump.

If Baton Rouge is going to continue having a zoo, it should be moved. Why is it so important to North Baton Rouge that it stays there? I wasn't the zoo was so popular with the people of that area.
Put it where it will get a lot more traffic... No somewhere way out the way of everything.

I have not read anything for or against moving the zoo, but I'm going to take a wild guess here and say....the money it would cost to move? Seems pretty obvious.

A major, major driver for this is that BREC thinks it can pass another dedicated tax to pay for the move. If that didn't happen, no way they would actually attempt to move the zoo.

I would guess that it would probaby be the same cost to build a new zoo on free property than to house animals while they renovate the existing location. Add to it the fact that they will get more visitors in the new location and people are more likely to pay a tax for a location that is newer and closer to them.
