Well, I guess that is a specific pitfall I did not take into account.
You know what I'm talking about specifically, right?
But, I mean, repeated and CLOSE (like first level) consanguinity led to this in the Habsburgs.
When your family has a deformity named after it...might be time to sow those seeds a little farther from the family tree.

Oh yeah, that is the first thing I thought about, the Hapsburg chin. As I understand it, only part of the physiological issue was the chin. The other thing that comes to mind was the high incidence of hemophilia in the royal houses of Europe via Queen Victoria. Ironically, her daughter Alix carried it to the Romanov house when she married Tsar Nicholas II. Their son Alexei was a hemophiliac. Tragically, it pretty much ended there, though.

There was a family in mandeville back in the day- parents were rumored to be cousins.

It is accepted that almost everyone of European ancestry has a common ancestor within the past 600 to 1000 years, so most of us are cousins to some degree.
I had 29 first cousins and a greater number of second and other degrees. Dozens of cheerleaders and school beauties. Family gatherings, weddings and even funerals with 100+ teenagers was roughly akin to speed dating.

Yup. And the Tsar's concern over his sons inherited illness led to being perceived as weak and ineffective, and under Rasputin's influence. These rumors, valid or not, made it that much easier to overthrow him and for the soviets to seize power leading to the deaths of tens of millions

The dateline a couple weeks ago was about a car dealer in Baton Rouge. He was from Iran and married his first cousin. He brought it all the way up to the Supreme Court that she shouldn’t get anything since LA doesn’t recognize 1st cousins ability to marry.
He lost the case and murdered her
I've seen that story in the local news many times and didn't realize that was his reasoning for killing her.

It’s not legal in Louisiana, but every few years the leg passes a law legitimizing all the 1st cousin marriages. So we have plenty of them here

I had this waitress who would come over after she got off, one night she said she was gonna bring a friend. She showed up with my 2nd cousin I don’t go through with it, that was 20 years ago and still regret passing on that. Neither one hot but 2 chicks.

Ferdinand I.
His parents were double first cousins.

quote:Yeah. My old roommate's parents were 1st cousins. I didn't know anything about it until the night before his wedding when his own 1st cousin was drunk as shite at the FloraBama, giving me a long list of reasons why he hated my buddy's fiancée. #1 on the list was that she was pissed to find out his parents were 1st cousins and made ugly comments about it to his family. Roommate and his sister were perfectly normal, though. I'd always wondered why he and his sister had been born in Florida when both parents' families were from a northern state. Once his cousin told me about the family secret, it all made sense.
Do you know anyone who are either married to their cousin
I did run across one other set of married 1st cousins in NWFL whose kids were mentally retarded and screwed up looking.
