There’s not going to be any conventional war with the Chinese. Those days are long gone.

I think they’re looking at better defining the mission of the Marine Corps. Future Marine Corps missions may not require heavy armor and artillery. It has always been difficult for the 105’s to keep up with maneuvering infantry. Leave fire support to the 81’s and naval guns. Half the time, arty wasn’t available because they were relocating. You can’t just keep leap frogging a split battery either...they would get slaughtered due to lack of security. We’ll be fine with 81’s and close air support. CAS doesn’t have to be provided by Marines either and more often than not wasn’t.

Also, and I can’t believe you guys haven’t figured this out, it will ensure females (by and large) are not able to fill combat roles in the Corps...which is a damn good thing.

I was thinking of the Turkish experience in Idlib. The Russians turned off their air defense systems for a day as part of a ceasefire, and the Turks took immediate advantage - flooding Syria with drones.

The Turks inflicted significant damage on the Syrians.

When the Russians flipped their air defense system back on, the drones ceased to be effective. The Turks lost 20 twenty over the next few days.

The Turks lost a number to missile fire, but the Russian electronic warfare platforms seem to have done just as much damage. The Turkish drones started crashing at a very high rate.

The current Commandant can shape a Corps if the future that will last for decades. Al Gray did it in the late 80s and a couple of other made some definite changes that had long lasting impact. But for the life of me, I do not understand the drastic manpower cut. A couple of 3 Infantry Battalions could mean a little longer between deployments. The reduction in Aviation, well, there has always been an underlying current of discontent there.

Just get rid of the WM's and farm out the admins and logistics personnel to civilians.

here's something random: the marines had shermans that ran on diesel in the Pacific

Diesel is less flammable and explosive than regular gas. That’s pretty important to the Navy, especially when they are being transported across the pacific.

With all due respect, please don't throw out comments on subjects you have no idea about. Below is the main battle tank of China's army.

I agree with those who would reply to you with the reminder that the Marines see themselves as light infantry. They consider themselves to be the finest light infantry in the world.

Light infantry may not have enough organic assets to sustain themselves in heavy combat, that's true. You're right about that. The intent is to not use the USMC in combat against enemy armor and mechanized forces.

Holy crap. My phone is going crazy. They announced the cuts. Old buddies are texting and calling asking WTF. The 8th Marines are being disbanded. Very sad. I spent four great years with 1/8 Weapons company. It was four of the best years that I spent in the Corps. They’ve been active for 70 years. Wow. 1/8 is going to the 2nd Marines and 3/8 will join the 6th. 2/8 and HQ are just gone.

Additionally, they slashed a shite load of air wing units. Looks like Camp Johnson will be a ghost town. Damn.

also reducing its number of infantry battalions from 24 to 21

Excuse me for asking for a clarification of a fact that may be obvious, but, this means that the entire US Marine Corps now has 24 infantry battalions and will reduce that number to 21 infantry battalions in the entire USMC?

Anybody know whether these numbers include the USMC Reserve numbers of infantry battalions?

Thank.

The Abrams will run on pretty much anything that will burn. Mainly used JP-8 but we've burned whatever we could get when necessary.

Sad, truly sad. You can never have enough “Boots for the ground” to have “Boots on the ground”!
