I can’t believe they are getting rid of cannons.

I can in a sense. Unless we’re doing something like what we did in WWII, it’s more difficult for Marines to get logistics around than it is for the Army. If we’re pushed many many miles inland and on our own with no way for the Navy to get us a resupply, that isn’t really our game.

As I said, we’re America’s hammer, we’re not the vice.

I see this move as us getting back to our roots.

This.

It makes sense to focus on USMC core functions of amphib and littoral operations.

The M119 is highly portable. Also it’s crazy pills they are going to field fuxking HIMARS/ATACMS batteries and get rid of the shot that actually works like the 105’s and 777’s.

How are they going to use ATACMS? Naval gun fire support would fill those gaps. ATACMS is not a core competency.

I tend to agree, we could use arty. However, I do not think it’s necessary for the USMC to do what it was originally designed for. Especially if we’re using the Navy to fill fire support.

Furthermore, I don’t see why army arty couldn’t be attached with USMC infantry units.

There really isn't a reason for the US to go to war against China. For what spreading the Corona virus around the world? There is no definitive way to prove the virus came from China honestly. It could have been brought into china and spread around the world.

I was more replying to the fact that you asserted that it was unheard of for people engaged in trade with each other to go to war. That was a pretty big reason why Japan went to war against us, we were supplying them with like 75% of their oil and cut it off. Hell, all of Europe was engaged in trade with each other before WWI touched off.

There’s a myriad of reasons why nations mobilize their militaries. And forces of trade do not stop militaries from coming to blows.

Look up Thucydides's Trap. There’s a whole book on it. War between us is likely inevitable.

I know of what you speak, but I’m not a genius in that field. I can’t tell the future, but I do know that we’ve gone a very long time without major world powers coming to blows. We’re due. However, I think we’ve done a very good job at keeping that beast at bay since 45. It won’t last forever and I hope I never have to see it come to that.

I never understand why people want wars. You go look at Iraq and Afghanistan those countries are completely ruined with millions of deaths. Many peoples lives ruined.

I’ve always thought of the USMC as the hammer of the US military. If you need something taken, call the Marine Corps, when you want to occupy that position, call the Army after the Marines have taken it.

What gave you this idea this? Lets take WWII for example. The Marines fought exclusively in the PTO. In that theater their mission never exceeded seizing small, albeit well defended, islands.

The largest island the Marines helped take was Okinawa. And even there the force structure was 4 Army divisions and 3 Marine Divisions under the overall command of 10th Army.

And in the largest land campaign of the Pacific, there wasn’t a single Marine Division involved. The Philippine Campaign saw the US commit 16 Army Divisions under 6th and 8th Army. No Marine divisions took part in the Philippine Campaign.

The Battle of Okinawa and the Philippine Campaign represent the two largest land battles of the Pacific. In the larger of the two it was an exclusive US Army force fighting on the ground. In the smaller of the two, the US Army still outnumbered the Marines.

And let us not forget it was the US Army who fought across North Africa, Italy, and from both north and a south France all the way to central Germany. And if you look at divisional casualty rates you will find that those US Army divisions fighting in Europe suffered higher casualty rates than either Marine or Army divisions fighting in the Pacific. In fact, if memory serves me correct, I believe it was 1st Marine Division that suffered the highest casualty rate of any PTO division, either Army or Marine. However, had that 1st Marine Div fought in the ETO suffering that same casualty number, they’d only rank about 8th on the list.

What if they attack us first?

Christ, it’s like your concept of history started last week. China has been an enemy for decades. Tensions have only eased cause the Chicoms decided they liked having our Money. But we have plenty of reasons to fight China. Luckily both parties would rather make money than fight. For now.
