Great two days on the route. The weather was everything.

I really prefer the family friendly atmosphere and smaller crowds for some areas of Thoth to the rest. If you stay off the Bacchus route for Thoth, the crowds are very manageable.

It seems like that’s a post Katrina phenomenon. I remember growing up we would get out to Thoth around 11 and walk up to Henry’s bar with a ladder and my dad would park my brother and I on the sidewalk near the bar.

Now you have people taking over entire blocks of magazine or the neutral ground on St. Charles with pop up tents.

The pop up tents are a much bigger issue in my mind than the ladders.

The crowds were nuts b/c they allowed people to keep their awnings and tents on neutral ground throughout the week. Those guys then tell all their peeps in Chalmette, Northshore etc, "hey baw, we set up all week. Come down Saturday and bring other baws"!

We rent a hotel on the St. Charles Ave route for the convenience of setting up a bar in the room and ease of restrooms. It’s been a great few days.

This year, Superior was renting out tables for the day yesterday. We got a table for 8 and just went back and forth all day to eat and drink with no lines to wait in. That is the way to go for sure. Made it super easy

I love the idea of renting a table for the day on the route, and actually almost just posted about that in my other comment. I saw several restaurants and bars offering that, which gives you a “home base” if you don’t have a tailgate type spot.

The view from a porch on St. Charles watching attractive young ladies walking to the parades in perfect weather was fantastic.

I would absolutely be out every day if I lived in New Orleans and it was as simple as fixing a drink and throwing on shoes to walk there.

The best way to get around town during Mardi Gras is by bicycle. You can get through the backed up traffic with ease, get right up to the parade route and lock up the bikes to a fence-----just make sure your lock is a real good one so the bikes will be there when you're ready to ride again.

Throw a little backpack on your back with snacks, things to drink, etc. and have fun while getting a little exercise to boot.

were doing that at least 30 years ago

Not like it is now- As with anything else it's an arms race. Similar to the way Tiger Stadium tailgating has changed since I was a kid. Uptown families are extremely competitive in their way

It's one thing to claim the area you're actually standing in or where your chair is. It's something else entirely to put a formation of chairs down and claim a "zone." There's also, imo, a big difference between claiming an area in the back for your food table, etc., and trying to claim a large space right up by the barricade. I tell my kids, just because someone puts a tarp down doesn't mean they own the land.

I mean, they probably stayed over night to put that tarp down or at least got there in the very early hours of the morning. You’re a dick if you wonder up about 30 minutes before the parade and set up on their tarp

It seems to me like a lot people are way too aggressive in their neutral ground land grabs when it comes to the amount of space they take vs the people actually there… as if it’s a tailgate on the parade ground or by Alex box

And the old harpies with 5 empty chairs next to them who will scream at you if you stop to check your phone next to them.

Just ignore them.

For Tucks I had some friends riding so when their float was coming I tried to work my way to the front to see them. If the Germans had set up all those tents, canopies, ladders, chairs, platforms, etc on Omaha Beach for D-day, the Allies would have never made it up the beach. I could not even get halfway towards the front.

I see both sides of this.

On one hand I try to respect people’s space. On the other you have some setups that build a border around their spot so nobody can cross.

That’s just stupidity and I can totally understand someone with kids coming in and moving their setup around.

Nobody owns the neutral ground, but plenty have started to act like they do.

I would start by banning the tarps and tents. Show up with ten dump trucks before parades and remove it all from public property. The ladders are less of an annoyance but no scaffolding or platforms should be allowed.

The area around Superior was crazy for Bacchus.

I can attest. The crowd was something like Bourbon Street yesterday except it was well behaved. Very crowed but fun like is supposed to be.

It started after Endymion was forced to use the Uptown route after Katrina. All the Chads did the Orleans Ave. setup on St. Charles and poisoned it for the rest of us.
