The water is already so damn high from the river, shite is only going to get worse once the storm surge gets here. Not going to take a lot to on the west side
The water outside the MS River levees isnt any higher than normal. I fished Port Sulphur this past weekend and the water in the marsh was actually a little on the low side.

Plaquemines Parish always orders evacuations early for the lower portions of the parish because its a peninsula surrounded by water on 3 sides and there’s only one road out on each side of the river. Unlike Orleans, they don’t wait until its too late to tell people to leave.

ETA: agree with you on the Morganza though. Not just hurricane season but its probably not a good idea to leave this much stress on the lower MS River levees for a record breaking length of time

I met a guy while evacuated in Galveston 2 days after Katrina that told me his parents in Venice refused to evacuate and he could not get in touch with them. He said his parents house was about 10’ above sea level and the estimate then was that the storm surge was 20’. He was pretty despondent and said no one could make them leave.

Would someone please explain the concept of a “voluntary evacuation”? WTH does that even mean?

Am I not free to evacuate at any time?

Just an official way of saying “we suggest you leave now....or at least get packed up and be ready to leave if we have to upgrade it to a mandatory evacuation”

Water stacks in a hurry on the westside. The last couple years Myrtle Grove marina floods with a stiff wind.

Neighbor of mine once refused to evacuate. I filmed the Coast Guard enforcing that order with him

It basically means you are on your own.

Now throwing Miss River being extremely high might throw a monkey wrench in what people usually do.

East side these people know the drill.
Their family most likely across the levee in St Bernard or further up. Few people left to tie up loose ends.

Western side same old stuff now Miss River being high may change people’s attitudes.

Usually Camp owners probably coming in the get their stuff in order.
Some people down there may stay.
Gas station tire shop owner may stay as his services are needed to fix boat & travel trailers and moves to a safe area at last minute.

I ignored the mandatory evacuation for Katrina while living in the Rigolets. It was a foolish mistake that I am fortunate enough to NEVER make again. This storm,of course is no Katrina, but storm surge is a killer and its nothing to take lightly.

When the Corp had a meeting after Katrina at Woodlawn Plantation in Port Sulphur to show the new flood protection system, I walked up, looked at the map, looked at the guy from the Corp and said, " Looks like ya'll are writing off the parish south of Oakville and across the river. Of course he told me "No sir you will have 50 year storm flood protection.
