This TED Talk was really enjoyable, the guy is a great speaker but his solution was seemingly so abstract and "pie in the sky" I lost my excitement near the end. Some of his points were spot on for my work environment, I can certainly say that.

Nigel Marsh - How to Make Work/Life Balance Actually Work

I like what I do career-wise but it seems that my new boss (who is in his 50's, single with no kids) doens't understand that some of us are fathers and want to leave before 6pm to watch our kids play sports 1-2 nights a week...and yes, I get into the office every day at 7am. I work in the oil/gas/LNG trading space for a major.

And yes, this is a crybaby thread. I will take my lumps from your assholes.

Side Note ::: My brother in law's firm (a benefits management company of course) has a new philosophy called life-work balance..."putting life first before work". Maybe it sounds great, it's not even 24 hours old but he's saying they are keepping track of people who are workng more than 50 hours in the office via monitoring the time spreads when people badging in and out, offering $100 cashback per month for people who provide proof of valid gym memberships, stuff like that.

It's kind of a struggle. Helps that the people I work with have families. I hear what you're saying about the single guy boss.

I've found that the best balance is to work as little as possible.

Well, it shouldn't be a problem. That's kind of the point.

we all make choices with our lives. maybe you shouldn't work in the energy sector. in fact there aren't many great jobs that don't ask for you to make scheduling sacrifices.

could be worse, you could work many other jobs that would pay much less and you still wouldn't get to go to the games

I would be finding a new job ASAP, I learned long a go to work to live not live to work. How much is that extra money worth if you ware putting in 10+ hour days, weekend, and answering email when you do get a vacation?

I'll take less money for less work. Unless most people, I don't feel the need to keep up with the Jones' and live in a $3000,000 mcmansion in the suburbs, buy a new King Ranch F-350 every other year, and take 4 or 5 vacations a year. I enjoy my simple life.

I refuse to work past 4:30. After that it's time for my kids. I can catch up on emails after they go to bed but I'm not staying at the office all night letting them think they aren't my priority. No person will ever die and wish they worked more.

not any more. I have discovered that with most firms its now what you accomplish but instead whose dick you suck, figuratively and proverbially.

Once I figured that out, I just stopped working as much and instead started telling people how busy I was, and then make a big fricking deal out of the things I do accomplish.

This helped me make more money than doing more work. the reward for a job well done is usually more work.

No way is my life passing me by while I'm stuck at an office. I gave up a "dream" job for this reason.

I quit my old job once my wife became pregnant because the company demanded >100% billable rate and 60 hour weeks

With my new job, the ceiling is probably less (although I do make more right now), but I enjoy being able to be home at 4 pm every night with my family

No it's not. frick those kind of offices and bosses. I'm very fortunate to be at a place now that will stop the meeting and shoo you out the door at 415 if they remember that your son has basketball games during this time of year.

Your boss sucks donkey dong.

I think some bosses still have the mentality of work above everything certainly and it's a very shortsighted view. It may sound great on paper to have your workers balls to the wall 12-15 hours a day but human beings are not robots. When people are worn down emotionally and mentally, they simply aren't as productive or consistent as they would be otherwise. You're better served allowing your workers to have some enjoyment and satisfaction in their lives rather than to grind them until they turn to nothing but bitter, angry, unproductive employees.
