I don't know how you get any work done. Way too many distractions for me.

TD is probably a bigger distraction while at my office (this is my last week here), than when I worked from home (my previous job was a remote position too).

We're pretty lucky at my job. They let us take any time off needed for family/kid stuff. I even leave for my niece's school stuff and have had to take some time off to help when she's sick.

Never have been denied when asked for vacation time. And it's at all levels. People are in and out all the time with kid/family stuff.

How about they just might want to get out the house. I know a few retired well off people that do this. Heck, I had kicked that around, but not happening.

Not going to lie if this was me, I'd be wrecking shite. If your under 30 then this is the time when you can put in a ton of hours to get ahead and move up. That way, when you do have a family, your the a-hole walking out the office at 3:30 telling all your employees they need to finish their shite before they go home.

My company gives every other Friday off to its stateside employees. I do rotations overseas though. 12 hours a day 7 days a week. But when I'm him I'm home. Do nothing with regards to work except check my email for my next assignment.

understand that some of us are fathers and want to leave before 6pm to watch our kids play sports 1-2 nights a week...and yes, I get into the office every day at 7am. I work in the oil/gas/LNG trading space for a major.

I would curse my boss out if he told me anything about going to see my kids play sports or anything to do with my family for that matter. That's a no-no

I actually did that. I make less than I did 18 months ago but I like my job a lot better.

There's always one young knee bender in the office. Congratulate yourself and wipe your mouth please!

My Dad worked shift work, I never thought less of him or his love for me not being at a function, he had to work. We liked to eat and wear clothes. I am glad he kept his job.

Sometimes I have to be out of town, my little princesses and princes should understand the necessity, shite happens, somebody has to tend to the crops.

I don't get the need to demand 100% participation in all things kids do. I coach em all, volunteer at school, go to church and all that stuff and sometimes you just gotta work

I'm still in school but I find it harder everyday to try to find time for it all. It's books and studying consistently, then trying to find time to hqve time for SO, with a job involved as well and also find time for family. It's a very tough balance and I can only imagine it gets tougher man

Americans in general need to do a better job of finding balance in life/work.

As someone who has struggled with work-life balance the last few years and probably negatively impacted my health in doing so, I think we're reaching critical mass in terms of work bleeding into our personal time. For the most part, there's really no such thing as an 8-5 anymore in the corporate/private sector, and constant connectivity and email on our phones has exacerbated this decline.

Up until a decade or so ago, once you left the office you were pretty much done. That changed forever with smartphones; now, you're always reachable. How many times have you seen someone on a conference call or checking email at a kid's sporting event or family outing? Even at these personal junctures, we're allocating time and focus to work.

As a society, we really need to be having a national dialogue about this going forward. We can't just keep grinding ourselves to nubs under the battle flag of "but this is 'Merica!" That's simply not a sustainable way of life.

With AI and increasing technology, many jobs, even professional positions may be obsolete or scaled down heavily in the near future.

Side Note ::: My brother in law's firm (a benefits management company of course) has a new philosophy called life-work balance..."putting life first before work". Maybe it sounds great, it's not even 24 hours old but he's saying they are keepping track of people who are workng more than 50 hours in the office via monitoring the time spreads when people badging in and out, offering $100 cashback per month for people who provide proof of valid gym memberships, stuff like that.

sounds like a company who was desperately trying to figure out why they had a major retention problem
