i have a 42 year old friend who sells shoes. he wish he had worked harder as a younger man that is for sure.

my other piece of advice is that if you can learn how to get other people to do your job for you, you will always be a winner. Its an art to master but worth 100% of effort put into it.

Its surprisingly easy to do too. All you have to do is convince them that doing project A will benefit them.

First big step for me was gym membership close to work. This way I force myself to leave and workout at lunch every day. So my health and hobby of working out no longer eat into my family time and I don't stay chained to my desk for 9,10 or 11 hours a day. I leave work at the same time every day and if necessary I'll answer some emails from home, but I make it a point to not work extra to make myself look good if its not actually needed. Good luck!

All depends on your field IMO. Being in IT, I don't actively try to work beyond about 10 hours a day. However, if shite hits the fan or if software upgrades are needed that can only be done in downtime, then so be it. Unlike some folks though, I don't view that work as an extra burden or something unpleasant. It's just inherent with the field of work I've chosen.

I refuse to work past 4:30. After that it's time for my kids. I can catch up on emails after they go to bed but I'm not staying at the office all night letting them think they aren't my priority. No person will ever die and wish they worked more

Most good companies have realized that this is so important in the big picture and have put things in place a long time ago to encourage a better work life balance.

We get gym reimbursements, a very good wellness plan with all kinds of gift cards and incentives to try to get us to be healthy, discourage working more than 50 hours a week, offer flex schedules including every Friday or ever other Friday off.
We have walking paths at work and are encouraged to walk and wear the company issued fit bit to have competitions with other divisions or just against co-workers.

We also get $400 if you are overweight and lose a certain amount of weight or $250 a year to say within a healthy weight/BMI.

I was shocked when I was given 4 weeks of vacation to when I started my job.

frick that philosophy. It's way too common. And it's not how shite needs to be. Like when you finally leave a mean bitch and you're looking at your friends who are happy with a chick like "You motherfrickers knew this all the time and didn't tell me I could be happy in a relationship?"

I like what I do career-wise but it seems that my new boss (who is in his 50's, single with no kids) doens't understand that some of us are fathers and want to leave before 6pm to watch our kids play sports 1-2 nights a week

Nice guy? I don't give a shite. Good father? frick you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here - close! You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit? You don't like it, leave.

I have a great work situation, my boss is out of state but this is a very family oriented company, I put in the hours when they are needed but other than that I am not pushed to put in extra hours. I work my arse off when I am here to make sure I don't need to work extra hours unless absolutely necessary. Every also understands that when I am on vacation I might as well be dead, my boss even give me shite about it "you will have your cell phone right? i'm just fricking with you!"

Work to live. Don't live to work.

If that doesn't fit your boss's plans, find another job. Life is too short.

sure

doubt that has anything to do with the number of hours they spent working in a grocery store though

One summer when I was 16 I worked nights at a grocery store stocking shelves and cleaning floors. There were 2 or 3 middle aged men with families doing this shite probably making a whole .10 more an hour than me while trying to raise families. They were generally idiots who I don't think ever wanted to do more in life than to just get by.
One of those smart guys told me that I shouldn't be working like this at my age as I should be out partying and having fun.

My first couple required working by the clock which sucked, after that I only took jobs that allowed me to make my own schedule as long as the necessary work got done.

most of these people have fallen into one of these categories

1. drug abuse
2. alcohol abuse
3. gambling addiction
4. multiple ex wives
5. poor health (any number of reasons)
