Thanks for the link, CatfishJohn.

I'm not sure how realistic it is to play dead unless I'm unconscious. If you get bitten by something, how many of us can overcome the survival instinct to fight back?

To DeCat: I've been to a big cat sanctuary with lions, tigers, etc. I was in a tour group with old people and kids in it. I hung back a couple of meters. Any kind of cat, acted non threatening to the group. At first. As soon as any of the old or kids turned their backs to head to another exhibit, I saw the telltale crouch. Hindquarters tensed, close to the ground/tree branch, it was on. Farmers in India will often wear masks on the backs of their heads to try to dissuade attacks from tigers. I don't disagree with anything you said, but apex is going to apex.

I can't believe it's been 20 years since the Whiting Ranch attack.
Dude was mountain biking and the big cat chased him down.

Buddy got an elk tag a few years back and when he was walking back to his camp site a big lion was stalking him and got within 30 yards. He packed all his shite up and went back to Louisiana

That's not how hunting works and you know it. Don't be an idiot.

The article said they were collecting shed antlers, maybe this altered their scent and gave mixed visual clues to trigger the cat into predator mode?

I doubt the sheds had anything to do with it. If they were shed hunting they likely had a good bit of baw in them and put up a good fight. Nature is just raw and scary sometimes.

Yea, good point about nature, it gets real very quickly.
Like someone else said if the cat was stalking them, and not an accidental encounter they probably never saw it coming.

interesting, considering this also happened in California in 2003.

I remember that one. She was jogging and the lion hit her from behind. The trackers figured it all out from the prints.

How high are you? That thing would split your neck open with one claw.

Buddy of mine was a bow hunter in MT. Said he was stalked for two hours by a big cat. He could hear it, briefly sight it, but never could shoot it.

I’ve never been jumpy in the woods here (we’re in MT for the month), but the other day I went on a solo run up in the Rattlesnake Wilderness (OT: ExoSpikes and Altra LonePeak All Weathers are an incredible combo on ice and packed snow), and about 4 miles out/up, it got so quiet you could hear a … paw… drop. I got the creeps and just had that feeling I was being stalked. No one had been up there in some time—no [human] footprints in snow at all.

There were probably hungry kitties out doing some early spring prowling.

I started coming up with all sorts of plans for my self-defense. Can I wield my collapsible carbon poles as nunchucks?

Now I’m reading about a family of the f’ers roaming around our neighborhood this past Christmas Eve. Killed a deer in someone’s yard. LINK

I guess if I had to be mauled to death and turned into human meow mix, it may as well be in a pristine spot.

You don't carry a gun with you? This seems like common sense.

Kinda hard to run with a gun. I’ve never carried a gun. I’d probably shoot myself.

That’s their territory, either pack heat when you are out there or don’t go. RIP

Had similar happen to me in September 2017 in Colorado at night walking back to our campsite.

Fortunately for me, I saw one of its eyes (looked like a yellow LED light, but I didn’t realize it was eyes) with my headlight about 75 yards right off the trail, before I walked within 12 yards of it before I saw both eyes. I was bow hunting but I had a Glock .40 cal on my hip. One of the scariest experiences of my life.

Not a fully grown one. Not a chance.

There is one instance of a grown man choking out a juvenile cougar though.
