It was supposed to be a birthday surprise for Dennis, who was turning 62 the next day. Instead, it was a tragedy.

Richard Dennis was startled when he heard someone banging on his backdoor around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, authorities say. The 61-year-old gripped a gun as he stepped outside his home in Gulf Breeze, Florida. When he saw a person jump out of the bushes, he pulled the trigger.
Only then did Dennis realize who the person was: his son-in-law.

Christopher Bergan had flown 4,500 miles from Norway, where he and his wife live, to get to the Florida Panhandle. It was supposed to be a birthday surprise for Dennis, who was turning 62 the next day. Instead, it was a tragedy: The bullet hit Bergan "straight in the heart," Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said, killing the 37-year-old instantly.

Calling the shooting a "tragic accident," authorities announced on Thursday that they wouldn't be pursuing criminal charges against Dennis.

"I'll tell you this much: Anybody who's religious out there, you need to pray for this family because this is - I can't imagine what they're going through," Johnson said during a news conference. "I really can't. It's horrible."

In a coincidence that may have contributed to Dennis' state of mind the night of the shooting, another relative had pounded on his front door at about 9:30 p.m. The two had a "verbal altercation," Johnson said, and Dennis chased that relative off.

Bergan probably didn't know that when he landed at the airport around 11 p.m. and headed to Dennis' house. A Norwegian citizen, Bergan had lived in Florida for years before returning to his native country with his wife.

Let's surprise my father in law by jumping out of bushes at almost midnight to scare him.

Play stupid games doesn't even apply here.

Didn’t Ryan Perriloux do this shite to his sister and her BF when he was a youngster?

He nearly got Darwined at the time and clearly didn’t learn from it.

This is why guns shouldn't be handed out to anyone who can afford one.

i would guess that 9 times out of 10 that same situation would end up in a shooting.

Or, this is why you shouldn't attempt to execute a surprise birthday greeting on a 62 year old at 11:30 PM whilst hiding in bushes acting suspiciously. At that point, you're just a target.

That's definitely manslaughter. "Scary noise at somewhat late hour" does not equate to "need for deadly force."

Whoa, ok, my first impression is he was a good SIL to fly all the way in from Norway to surprise his FIL. Second impression is he does not truly understand people from the south. If someone is messing with you at twenty to twelve in the evening jumping out of the bushes unannounced, you have to think about unintended consequences. And finally what a dumbshite daughter who did not provide some sort of buffer in this hole thing. She dropped the ball.

Probably should have assessed the situation a little better before hand.

Wait...you are blaming the old man?

How bout...this why you shouldn't beat on someone's door in the middle of the night then jump out the bushes and try and scare them.

yeah, you should really give your assailant a few extra seconds before you pull the trigger. i hear that works well.
