It was 1976 and I was a 9 year old Cub Scout that was interested in military history.
I made a Pinewood Derby car and wanted to decorate it with Swastika & SS decals from some of my model kits.
Mom & Dad said "Nah, Let's not do that" I didn't understand. It was only "History"
They explained that people were alive today that experienced the Holocaust first hand and these symbols could trigger painful memories & anxieties.
So, I understood and used German military symbols like the Iron Cross. Nothing to do with the Nazi Party.
I didn't win the race but won 1st prize for the best looking car. That was 1976. This is 2025. The only people that have the right to be upset by that costume are no longer with us.
