A man in the process of getting divorced landed a massive jackpot, only to find he had to share the winnings with his ex-wife. A Michigan appeals court ruling means the lottery winner, Richard A. Zelasko, has to share the money.

Nearly two years after filing for a divorce, Zelasko won a Mega Millions jackpot in 2013 worth nearly $39 million after taxes and deductions. But the divorce wasn’t final until 2018, The Associated Press reported. An arbitrator for the couple ruled the ticket’s winnings should be shared because it was part of the marital estate. The court noted the arbitrator reasoned “that that was probably not the first lottery ticket that defendant purchased during the marriage and that, ‘[a]s losses throughout the marriage were incurred jointly, so should winnings be shared jointly.’” The arbitrator ruled $15 million was owed to the wife, Mary E. Zelasko, and the appeals court upheld a lower court ruling.

If she would have won, would she also have had to split it?

That’s some bullshite. That’s why you file up front in Louisiana and wait the required time period because the termination of the marital estate is retroactive to date of filing

Let this be a lesson to you: if you're going to get divorced, get fricking divorced already.

I agree with this ruling. If they were not divorced, they were still legally married.

And like already said, I don’t feel bad for him, he still has $24M

I disagree with this no matter who was the winner. So he could go buy a new vehicle and she would be responsible for half the debt because I’m sure he bought a vehicle during the marriage. The logic is faulty.

See, I would’ve collected the winnings for him then wrote him a check after his divorce was finalized and only charged him $10 million for the service.

Could’ve saved him $5 million and stuck it to his ex.

He should have given it to his best friend and split it with him. What an idiot.

No it isn't and it is actually bullshite. I'm assuming that they weren't living together for some time when he bought that ticket. So it isn't like they were sharing their income and they were effectively informally divorced and was just waiting for the slow arse procedures. Also why did it take so long to get it finalized?

This is why if you win you get your parents to claim it was theirs or a really good friend
