To be fair, he was talking about the average Joe making $30k whose wife wants half.

That’s why i laugh when someone y’all get butt hurt when people say marriage is terrible idea.

You can think the world about someone, love only them, and they can be your whole world but if they don’t want to be with you and roll out, this is the crap you have to deal with.

You have to give that person half of all your stuff even if it seems completely ridiculous or unfair.

There is no relevant or intelligent reason why a person would enter into a lifetime contract with someone else to have to give up half of everything you acquire

It's not your stuff. Why do you think only one person owns assets acquired during a marriage?

You get half of the entirety of what you as husband and wife have come to own during the duration of the marriage. It's only community property. What you owned beforehand or what you acquired through things like inheritance do not apply.

It's property that is as much yours as it is hers. If 2 people own a collection of items, properties, bank accounts, etc in equal 50/50 proportions, how would you believe they should be portioned out if their partnership ends?

So the poor guy only gets to keep $24 million? Damn...what’s this world coming to?

Look at it this way: he’s getting 24 mil, which is more than he ever imagined he would ever have, give her 15 mil and most importantly...he’s done with her. Now he can go out and fight off all the gold diggers that will be throwing themselves at him. He should just make sure he get a vasectomy first !!!!!

Whether the decision was correct or not, the ruling awarded her < 40%. She gets $15mil, he keeps $24mil.

not without a contract with her agreeing that it is OVER financially, and that you are off the hook financially, forever

Good point. That would be a little different situation.

would you get taxed again if that family member or friend"gave" you the agreed amount after being the so called winner?

I disagree with this no matter who was the winner. So he could go buy a new vehicle and she would be responsible for half the debt because I’m sure he bought a vehicle during the marriage. The logic is faulty.

Yes, actually. They weren't divorced.

As shitty as it is, they should not have allowed their divorce proceedings to drag out like this. Just fricking divide shite up and move on with your lives.

Side note- can you imagine the psychological toll a fricking 7 year divorce would have on a person? Damn.

it would be an absolute necessity, and a great opportunity to shut down the $ hemorrhaging to the lawyers and be done with the bitch, my ex was still trying to get $ from me 15 years post divorce, only thing that stopped her was she drank herself to death

We really have no idea why the divorce has taken so long to be finalized. He could have been the one slowing things down.

Also, I only read the OP and not the article so I could be completely wrong.

You can’t go on some wild arse shopping spree and expect your separated husband to pay for half of it. That’s not how the law works.

Actually, it is

It’s stupid...but the law. You have to sign a petition to separate both housing/finances. Without that signed your ex could go buy whatever the frick she wants and you’re obligated to pay for half of it.

ETA: some states don’t even allow that.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how all of this works. I bought my car before my wife and I were married. She has no right to it if we are divorced.

We bought the house together, after we were married. Therefore, we would split that.
