Man faces 5th DWI charge while on probation for 3rd

A West Monroe man is facing multiple charges after a DWI arrest Saturday.

According to an arrest affidavit for Claude Bouwell, 33, Sandal Street, a WMPD officer saw Bouwell's right tires leave the roadway and go up on the curb as he turned right into a store parking lot.

When the officer made contact with Bouwell, he had an open, mostly full bottle of beer. Per the report, the suspect's speech was slurred, his eyes bloodshot and watery and he swayed as he spoke.

Bouwell told the officer he consumed alcoholic beverages prior to the stop. He also performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test.

The suspect was transported to West Monroe Correctional Center where his blood alcohol level displayed as 0.203 percent on an breath test.

According to the report, Bouwell has four prior DWI arrests in the state, including three in 2012 and one in 2014. He was on probation for the third conviction until 2020, and his license was suspended at the time of the stop.

Bouwell was booked into Ouachita Correctional Center on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, fourth or more, improper lane use, operating a vehicle while under suspension for certain prior offense and possession of an alcoholic beverage in motor vehicles.

Total bond has not been set.
