so did he try to kill someone before he ran across the kid?

Aranda told police he had been frustrated by women rejecting him at the mall, and that he had intended to kill an adult there the day before.

Wow, that was pretty fast adjudication for a crime of this magnitude.
Probably because the guy admitted it right away, told him his motivation for doing it, and plead guilty.
Cases like that should move this quickly if our court system wasn't so bogged down. But he should definitely have gotten life.

Don’t think it went to trial.

pleaded guilty last month to attempted premeditated first-degree murder of a 5 year old child.
How the hell is this just 19 years?

Dementors?

"On what was to be a normal day for us of fun and playing, a day meant for good, you choose to commit a horrific violent act," said the father's statement.
The mother said the boy "is going to be OK" in hers. "Something really bad must have happened to you for you to want to do this to a sweet, innocent little boy," her statement said.
Aranda stood in front of the family's attorney, his head lowered, arms behind his back as he listened. He declined to make a statement.
Man, I'd have a really hard time not getting arrested myself by jumping over the railing and going after that guy.

Judge Jeannice Reding said Aranda will get credit for the days he has served and could be granted up to 76 months supervised release for good behavior.
holy shite.

Seems like a light sentence in my opinion.
hopefully his prison mates see to it it becomes a life sentence after a short year or two and he goes out the door in a body bag

Should've gotten death. His sentence shouldn't be dependent on him being lucky and the kid surviving
The problem with that line of thinking is if they are considered the same people will argue that someone should get a longer sentence if, in this case, the child died. Attempted murder is already an increase in the charge over whatever MN calls their most grievous battery.
A plea to 19 years is probably a good outcome in the solicitor's mind. Without the plea, there would be a protracted trial with the possibility of time served in a mental institution because I would expect there to be a insanity defense. The crime has some classic signs of legal insanity.
I didn't research it fully but murder 3rd carries up to 25y, 2nd 40y and 1st life in MN. In general 19y for attempted murder is a very long sentence, longer than the Fed guidelines even for an attempt on a member of Congress.
I meant to add 20 years is the statutory maximum for attempted murder in MN. Which is in line with most states. For the max 240 months, the crime must be considered a 6 (the max) on their crime severity scale for the offense. Hard to argue 19y was not a good outcome for the solicitor. One can argue the statutes don't allow for a longer sentence.

That was quick. Must've been a plea.

This is overblown though
Maybe a little? But keep in mind that childhood abuse and neglect is a very common background within the prison population. That is where the anger and retribution against prisoners with child victims originates.

Frick that guy. I hope he dies in prison

Should get death or at the very least no chance to ever be free again, that's absurd.
Also, how the heck did this happen and is already done in 3 weeks? I feel like these things usually take forever, even for a guilty plea, no?

Multiple bullets in all limbs and left to bleed out would have been more appropriate.

Willing to bet this guy slips and falls off a three story walk way.

If that was my kid there would have been no sentence.

Yeah he shouldn't get a lighter sentence just because he failed to kill him.
The act is the same. The result should be independent of that.
Just like our favorite judge Bonnie Jackson not charging NBA youngboy with attempted murder because "he was a bad shot". Apparently bad aim in a drive by gets you probation that will never be revoked for any reason.
