W have lots of elevated highways as well, but the lack of snow mitigation equipment is problematic. That said, if you go a careful steady pace, you'll be fine anyway. But I doubt most people follow that protocol.

He's forecasting that a swath from the Carolinas down through central MS-AL-GA will see a good bit more moisture than previous model runs, resulting in additional precipitation.

That could mean more snow, sleet, rain, etc.

Could also mean significant travel issues for places like Atlanta if they get a warm slot and switchover to freezing rain at some point.

Winter storm watch just elevated to winter storm warning for north Georgia.

NWS updated again for our area of NE Gwinnett - now saying less than a half inch of snow but potentially 0.36 inch of ice.

Man if those turns into an ice storm instead of snow I’m be pissed.

I’ve seen 2 inches to 7 inches of snow for Forsyth county

Very saturated at 700mb. Higher end QPF should be anticipated in this corridor

Someone translate this for me.

Got a haircut yesterday and my barber (raised in Gwinnett now lives in Jackson) said his gut feeling was an ice storm. Said the last few days didn't feel like an approaching snowstorm but more like the weather preceding the ice storms of 2000 (Super Bowl weekend) and 1973 (some folks were without power for 10 days).

Why is my weatherman telling me that this morning was just an appetizer and the real stuff comes tonight? Frick him.

At 700mb (pressure) there is lots of activity, which usually means more rain/snow. It's looking like the higher end of the Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (rain/snow predictions) will be more likely rather than the low end.

DOT brined the main roads last night into this morning. That lowers the freezing point of the surface.

Looking like an ice storm here in Columbia too. I saw the trucks were out on 77 south laying down the liquid now so at least DoT is taking it seriously.

Thank goodness it's Friday night. Wife's flight out of Charlotte to DC tomorrow is at 9am so hopefully that stays on schedule.

More Gulf moisture aloft means more precipitation falling out of the sky.

If you're in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina where it's colder, you may get a few more inches of snow.

If you're on the backside of this system in central Georgia where it's warmer, you may end up with ice.

Keep in mind this is just one interpretation of the latest data (which may end up not being correct). These winter systems in the South are notoriously difficult.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Peachtree City GA

From run to run, the models have trended towards more freezing rain
and less snowfall.
The warm nose aloft around 700mb to 750mb looks to
move in earlier and and stronger than previous models runs. This
means a messy precip-type forecast for much of north and central GA.

As models have gradually trended toward a more pronounced warm nose
and warmer thermal profiles, most frozen precipitation outside of the
far north Georgia mountains will likely be in the form of freezing
rain
with perhaps some lingering sleet by this time with the bulk
south of I-20 ending in only liquid rain. Additional light ice
accretion would be a concern, with total ice amounts potentially
reaching 0.2" or even higher when all is said and done. Certainly
with a trend toward a potential more pronounced freezing rain
solution, concerns for at least scattered power outages would also
increase.

In fairness, I read that discussion a couple of times and I think your second bolded portion is intended to speak to the end of the cycle (later Friday into Saturday)

That's how it struck me in context

It’s impressive how large of an area is under some sort of winter weather advisory/watch/warning with this system.
