Lucas oil stabilizer, etc.

Whats the OT's opinion on additives like Lucas oil stabilizer as well as some of the other stuff on the market? I've heard people swear by it and some people say it ruins engines. I've only used it like twice but wondered if its just snake oil or really doing some good.

It's all snake oil

I have a Chevy Silverado with 291,xxx on the original motor and transmission, just been changing the oil regular and it seems to be running fine. Uses a little but I expect thats normal with that mileage.

I use it on every oil change on all my vehicles. It’s not some miracle product but it definitely helps supplement the oil with engine wear and initial cold startup lubrication among other things. I used it in a 99 Sierra I recently sold that was at 285k miles and prone to rough valve and rocker clattering at start up and I do think it helped.

While I know what you mean by that what many people don't know is an engine that is "burning" NO oil is getting ready to fail.
Another bit of piston ring trivia, the split piston was invented by John Ramsbottom, why his parents didn't name him Richard I will never know.
ETA I didn't include the salient bit. LOS is of no use, especially with the added cost. If you think you need a thicker oil change the viscosity of the oil you use. LOS was proven on the Bobstheoilguy forum to cause air entrainment in the oil (contrary to the take away from playing with the little gears in oil counter display) which may or may not cause an issue.
TLDR it costs extra for no benefit and possible detriment

Everyone should put Lucas stop slip in their transmission
Posted on 6/28/19 at 9:19 pm to GoodOlBaw
My transmission was slipping in my old car.
Added Lucas. No more slip.
My only experience with it but dang it was a good one.

It all depends on what additives are in it and what you want to get out of it.
For new engines and new oil then it will likely have zero to no effect. For older engines if it was additives related to Helping seals and ehanced detergents to further clean suit or others high mileage related issues then I say “use it”.’

I don’t think the idea is to add weight as much as it is to reduce cold start up friction/provide additional lubrication/help seal up older engines.
Again, I’m not saying it’s some miracle product but I do believe it adds some benefits. That said, is the benefit worth the cost. For me that answer is yes because I need 6 qts and I buy the 5qt jug and 1qt of Lucas as opposed to buying the 1qt of additional oil.

Feel free to expand on this.

They have some good products. The power steering pump on my 1970 442 W30 started leaking and I found they had a steering fluid for older cars with an additive for seals. Poured that in and the leak went away. Still wasn't leaking 3 years later when I sold it.

I'm an oil need. I send every other oil change off... In every engine I own.
Just use a decent oil with either a shite him of moly or zinc, and change it before it's lost its lubricity.
The end.
I run mobil1 0w40 in almost everything.
Higher revving engines get 20w50 valvoline VR1 dino mixed with equal parts synthetic VR1. One has a shite ton of zinc, one has a shite ton of moly.
Diesels get Delo.
I run everything I own... HARD.

An engine has to burn a small amount of oil to not tear itself to pieces
