Patrolling a university isn't like patrolling North Baton Rouge. It's not as simple as locking up a bunch of thugs and calling it a day. Much of their work is outreach and trying to keep students from straying too far rather than slapping charges all night.

couldn't disagree more
that may the case in the future but definitely not now.
what I want as an employer is a deep thinker who is determined and organized
there are dozens and dozens of fields of study and degrees that can hone those skills including many many liberal arts and non STEM degrees

that's just for hiring young people though
Once you get enough experience and technical know how a degree means nothing as I suspect is the case with the LSU chief

Police Chief is a position that to me it doesn't matter as much whether the person has a college degree or not. In this case experience far outweighs education. But that person better have some incredible experience to make up for not having a degree. I mean at that age, does four more years of experience really make up for not having a college degree?

As someone who has obtained a stem degree and a liberal arts degree… something needs to be cleared up. It is a common misconception that a liberal arts degree does not teach you anything. While the material is essentially worthless, the degree does impart something of value. Reading comprehension and critical thinking. The average senior level class will require 30-40 pages of reading per night. The ability to process extremely large volumes of information, filter the chaff, and categorize the remainder is a skill, I say, is invaluable.

It isn’t uncommon for the owner of our company to drop in and hand us details for a new company we have a contract with. Whereas the other guys are bumbling through page by page looking for what’s important, I’ll quickly pound through the packet while he’s introducing it, pull out exactly what I need, and start asking questions about the company before the others are into it. When they hand in audits and findings, I can quickly review and amend things without getting bogged down in their fluff.

It sounds silly, but that particular degree taught me to read. If you see the average resumé, that isn’t a bad skill to have.

I see your point but you're assuming people who spent the last 4 years on the job, while you were fumbling through history books, haven't obtained the same skill set.

Does anyone know if the degree requirement was a requirement to apply for the job, or be hired for the job? If the rule only applied to applicants I see why they removed it. Making that guy finish his degree was a waste of time and just a formality. Just because they no longer require the degree does not mean they have to hire someone with one. There are people out there who are well qualified for positions because they have already been doing it for the last decade. It's silly not to consider them.

The best guy is the best guy. Degree or no degree.

I can't imagine how, in 2017, it's a bright idea to hire someone without a college degree to lead a UNIVERSITY police force.

You can say that again!!! I don't know how anybody could be a police chief without all that valuable knowledge that I learned in marketing.

So, let me get this straight...

If liberal arts degrees are pretty much worthless and non-STEM degrees are basically high school diplomas, then why doesn’t the acting police chief just go and get one of those, so he can fulfill the requirement of the job?

I mean, it’s easy, right? Wait... this guy isn’t smart or disciplined enough to get even one of those worthless degrees, and you’re okay with him being police chief?

I know Bart Thompson and he is a good man with more law enforcement experience than anyone on this board. He was the assistant chief there for a good while after retiring from BRPD. He will do a good job and he's honest to boot.

Eh

I spent those years working and gained better experience in the real world.

Obviously I'm biased, but degrees are overrated. Work ethic is more important.
