Highway Patrolman should have civil engineering degrees in order to better understand how a road system works.
That is not at all similar. Universities are a different animal from writing tickets as highway patrol, especially with the concentration of radicals they attract in today's America. Having firsthand experience on the student side of the equation would likely help a shitload.

I'd like to have some assurance that the baw leading the police force isn't a complete dumbass who stumbled into police work 30 years ago because he had nothing else going for him.

Would you rather 30 years of experience in military/law enforcement or an engineering degree from a mid-tier state school?

I was making fun of you because of this..
How would it help? You're either breaking the law or you're not.

Neither
I'd rather a binary gender fluid queer woman of color who will speak truth to power and bring the police department equity

Except the guy with a Finance degree has an easier time finding a job right now that the petroleum engineer.
I get your point, there are a lot of degrees that don't care a ton of economic value right now. I wouldn't go as far as to say they are worthless considering a four year degree is a must have for most jobs today. However, there are a few non-stem majors that do just fine for themselves. Accounting, finance, statistics, economics, architecture just to name a few.

You do realize M stands for math, right?

How bout someone with a degree and the required experience. I know that’s a really hard concept to wrap your head around

That’s pretty poor logic. If they’re so easy to get, it looks extra bad to not have one
hence the diploma reference. it's just something you need to have at this point - not something critical to your career success.
no reason a police chief needs a diploma. i'd rather him be a naturally smart dude with years of experience

Would a degree make someone with 7 years experience more qualified than someone with 15 years experience and no degree?

accounting is fine because it teaches you in-demand skills. finance is good too if you're from a named school. statistics fall under the M in STEM

Didn't you hear? TOPS is wasting money by funding 4-year degrees when businesses really only want 2-year degrees.

Did it take you 8 years to get a bachelors degree?

I'm just trying to gauge what kind of value an undergraduate degree has that experience alone can't provide.

How’s your MBA coming along?
Posted on 11/17/17 at 4:25 pm to Carson123987
Yes I do realize statistics falls under math. I still pointed it out because many statistics classes/majors are offered through the University's business department, which isn't considered STEM.

A degree isn't only applicable to his ability to lead patrol officers. In a way, as chief, you're running a business, whether it be budgeting or personnel, certain degrees can give you a much stronger understanding that experience alone wouldn't fully teach.

This is actually a big factor. Being a campus police officer is different than being a city cop. Just like being an MP on a military base is different than being a city cop. You need to understand the culture of the folks you are policing to be most effective. This is why it is harder for a rookie patrolman from the suburbs to learn to work the ghetto than a guy who grew up in the city. Not getting all SJW with this but any experienced LEO will tell you that the best cops are the ones who grew up in and understand the culture of the places they are working.
ETA: Not to mention, the fact that our states flagship university Chief doesn’t have a degree just looks bad.

countless people start their own businesses without a modicum of time spent in a business school. plenty of books, websites, business coaches, etc to learn from.
