BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
LSU has removed the long-standing requirement that the university’s chief of police have a college degree.

Acting Chief Bart Thompson, who has applied for the chief’s job, has completed college coursework, but does not have a college degree.

The change was made on November 8, when the position was changed from unclassified to classified.

Thompson was moved into the position after former Chief Lawrence Rabalais abruptly retired last June.

The college degree requirement has been a sticking point for LSU in the past.

When Rabalais was put in the job on an interim basis following the departure of Chief Ricky Adams, LSU allowed Rabalais time to obtain his degree. Once Rabalais received his degree, he was officially hired as the LSU police chief.

I can't imagine how, in 2017, it's a bright idea to hire someone without a college degree to lead a UNIVERSITY police force.

degrees are pretty much worthless these days; non-STEM degrees are basically high school diplomas now. def dont need a police chief to have one

Why should we care if a police chief went to college?

There is some truth to this, but it's overstated

I don't care what you learned as a liberal arts student. At least you've spent a few years around other moderately successful people and at least some intellectual pursuit you set out to achieve.

And of course, not all liberal arts degrees are the same, and even the same degrees can vary by student and by school. I'm sure you can go get a lib arts degree at a school like LSU and make it fairly challenging for yourself if you're so inclined.

yeah, it's just a generality. most of my friends that went for psychology and sociology and whatnot are waiters and bank tellers

not to say you cant succeed without STEM, you just have to have a strong network or pursue postgrad work

I'd like to have some assurance that the baw leading the police force isn't a complete dumbass who stumbled into police work 30 years ago because he had nothing else going for him.

I'm pretty sure that Jeff Leduff wasn't a college graduate and he ran a much larger force and was good at it. I just don't see where History 1001 helps with the job.

I'd rather him have extensive on the job experience.

I wouldn't necessarily call finance a worthless degree...

I think the degree vs no degree is a hard call, because the value of a degree is case by case, and the merits of a not-degreed person are as well.

I tend to think it's an overused threshold but I don't blame employers for using it as a filter. If they're so easily achieved, it's shouldn't take much effort to check that box, right? On the other side, there are certainly examples where it would have been a waste of a career path to simply "check the box" by getting a degree, and much more valuable experience and maturity was gained elsewhere. I don't know how common that scenario is, but it obviously happens.

You think a college degree in any way shape or form assures you of this?

it's a fine degree....if you're coming from a named school.

a finance degree from LSU carries no weight, so you better have some connections

That’s pretty poor logic. If they’re so easy to get, it looks extra bad to not have one

Certainly not. However, it's a strong standard, especially if your force will be patrolling a university.

An airbag doesn't assure that you'll survive a car wreck either. It still raises your odds significantly though.

Same thing here. While a college degree doesn't mean the person has a brain it does give you a hell of a lot more insight into their intellect.

Highway Patrolman should have civil engineering degrees in order to better understand how a road system works.

I'd rather someone with experience and without a degree over someone with a degree in gender studies.
