“During the review process, research was conducted on those who have campus roadways named for them and their contribution to the university,” LSU said in a statement. “The majority had little to no significant connection to LSU and were named without a formal process,”

Semmes was a professor at LSU after the war. No problem with renaming it Veterans Drive or whatever, but they ought to be honest about the motive instead of claiming he had no connection with LSU.

As for some of the others: Minnie Fiske was a famous 19th Century Actress born in New Orleans. Dorothy Dix was a pioneering newspaper columnist for the New Orleans Picayune. These names seem appropriate for streets on Sorority Row. They are being changed to "Parking Lot." WTF?

William C.C. Claiborne was the first Governor of Louisiana. His street is being renamed "Spruce," a tree not native to Louisiana. Again, WTF?

Exactly. Now they get to celebrate their great successes changing the name of a street that no one gives a frick about.

Semmes was one of the best commerce raiders in history.

Some of his records still stand today.

No body care about a road name, but watch if they come after fighting tigers how quickly the push back will be massive.

He pretty much singlehandedly devasted the US merchant shipping industry, and led to the practice of registering vessels under foreign flags.

LSU professor Bob Mann wrote an opinion piece calling for the name to be changed.

My opinion is that his name should be changed to Bobbie Bitch, because he isn’t a man.

To save money they could just cut off the second half of the sign and name it after the ninja turtle.

There's a good reason right there to change the name of the street....
