Admiral Semmes is still remembered in Mobile. His statue, dedicated in 1900, stands in downtown, above the entrance to the Bankhead Tunnel.
Semmes home in downtown on Government Street was built in 1858, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
The community of Semmes, my hometown, was named after the admiral. It lies northwest of Mobile a few miles and was incorporated in 2010 as the City of Semmes.

Yep, it's because when you erase history, you forget history. Semmes was a professor of philosophy and literature at LSU after the war. I'd say that has something to do with LSU. I do like this precedence though. No more naming anything at LSU after any former professors!
