re: "Lowball" Car Scam

I have sold a few used cars before and I tell them right up front of my two rules:
1. The first thing that happens is you show me your driver's license and I take a picture of it. I also take a picture of your car tag.
2. Only one person inside or near the car. If you come with someone else, that person stays in his car. If the other guy is a mechanic inspecting the car, then the first guy goes and sits in his car.

I'm lucky. I live on a major intersection. I just put a for sale sign on it and here they come. Always sell within 3 days.

I own and have owned old farm trucks, and have been through a few private party sales. You need to be good at reading people and profiling the hell out of them before engaging. Beyond that, meet in public spaces, especially police stations or banks (cameras everywhere). Banks are also good for getting titles notarized.

Never bring the title to the first meeting. And no way in hell would I get into a vehicle with two dudes I don't know.

All that said, my sales have gone well and I've been pleasantly surprised. But step 1, profiling the hell out of people to weed out crack heads, methians, scammers, and A-holes is the most important step.

If someone comes off as ignorant, crazy, rude, or a jackass in their first communication with you, they likely are just that. Cut bait and move on.

A huge part of Indian culture is izzat, their concept of honor and dignity. It basically involves always “winning” something or getting the best of someone. Hence why they never negotiate in good faith.
