Why do these things always happen in the middle of the night?

On the other hand, I had never seen my iPhone flip from 1:59am to 3:00am in real time. So I got that going for me now.

Somebody needs to invent a smoke alarm where you can turn the "midnight chirp" off by an app on your phone.

It is always in the middle of the night. When I change the battery in mine I immediately pop open the Amazon app and order another one. I actually drove to a convenience store one time at 2am to get one

If you replace them every New Year’s Day you shouldn’t have that problem.

Cooler nighttime temps drop battery voltage triggering the beep.

Agree with everyone on this so far! But why does it go off in the middle of the night?

It’s probably been going off, you just don’t hear it with all the daytime background noise.

I wish this was the case.

The one last night has a loud beep, then a voice that shouts Low Battery. No way I could ignore it and sleep through it all night. I tried it and gave up after 2 minutes.

The rule of thumb is to change them every time the time changes.

Maybe if you did that yesterday it wouldn’t have woke u up…….

Happened to me a couple months ago also. Problem was it was one of those detectors that is connected to the rest of the security. It was not a battery and the thing would do hi pitched squeals for a duration then stop for 5 minutes then do it again.
Had to take it out of the ceiling to stop it. It was middle of the night and the ceiling is probably 12 feet where it was connected.

This only happens once. After that, you will have learned to replace the batteries on a 5 year schedule.

(or at least this holds for those those of us who are married and would like to remained married)

BTW, the one making all the noise is your CO detector, not a smoke dector.

Temperatures at night are cooler, less movement in the house, less electronics and frequencies in constant use, the air itself is more still(no walking, no doors opening and closing, things moving etc). It’s a chem reaction within the battery when it’s on the lower end of life and there’s no stimulation, it chirps.

Last time it happened at my house, it was silenced with a hammer.
