Louisiana’s initial unemployment claims quadrupled to 82,290 claims last week

Last week, more people filed for initial pandemic unemployment here than in ANY OTHER STATE. In one week, initial claims in Louisiana went from 19,739 to 82,290 claims.
Last week’s jump in initial claims has been topped only twice in the past 30 years — after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and in the first week of coronavirus lockdowns this spring.
Initial unemployment insurance (UI) claims in Louisiana quadrupled to 42,724. Louisiana also led the country in initial claims for the temporary Pandemic Unemployment Assistance that ends December 26th rising at 39,566 claims.
What the hell is going on here? How are people living on $888 a month? Does this not worry people?

Breaks my soul how many families are being wrecked by this. The science says businesses and individuals able to work need to power through this. Don’t give a frick what posh DC idiots sitting on their ivory towers say..

An economist needs to do a study comparing the number of jobs that existed in LA when JBE took office to the number that exist today. Between all the jobs driven out of state or outright destroyed, I'll bet the decrease would be staggering. It is almost as if the guy set out with the economic destruction of the state as his main objective.

If the first vaccine is effective the economy will at least temporarily become a steamroller(No matter who is sitting in the White House)...in almost every state but Louisiana where our politicians have given death blows to our largest industries.

The lockdowns are worse than the virus itself; therefore, common sense says to stop doing it, but there must be another reason why government is seizing control

Socialism at its finest.
And to think people hated Trump so much that they’d rather have a Socialist Regime in control than OMB.
Democrats are idiots.

There is something really weird going on...my friend’s family business has had 18 employees in the past 40 years...they received 3,000 unemployment claims via the mail last week...computer glitch? Something deeperr? Honest mistake?

While I agree with you and your premise entirely, he would blame Covid and collapse of oil prices as the reason. He just mitigated the crisis and at least kept people safe and fed. That’s what he and the Dem Mayors would say once the economist released his reports. Then, the media would spin it that way and include a few personals stories of people and businesses that that support JBE and his decision making.
That’s how it would play out.

Well then take the study a step further and have the economist do the same study for Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama for the same period. We can all then see how Louisiana stacks up. It wouldn't be a pretty picture. At all.
