Monthly service will be cheaper than Starlink plus you won't have the upfront fee Starlink charges.

It's still pointless. Rural broadband is available via starlink and other options as has been mentioned previously

Starlink is $150 per month. The fiber network that serves my community is $50 per months thanks to the gubment subsidies.

Have some neighbors in rural Arkansas who looked into getting Starlink but said it was too expensive. They use a broadband connection because they work from home but still have to limit themselves to certain times of the day. We usually use a phone as a hot spot when we are up there but the connection is so poor it's sometimes unusable.

I have Starlink and is $90/month. That is not that expensive considering some crappy broadband companies charge @ $50. The difference is one night of eating out. I've had Starlink for a year and have never experienced any buffering or outages.

Some of you state Starlink is $120-$150. Does it cost more in other states?

I put in my address. It states its $120/month and $299 for startup equipment. Maybe it's different depending on where you live.

$300 for equipment is standard. You'd either pay that much getting your own router/modem, or you'd be paying a fee to rent their shitty equipment with regular internet.

NEver ceases to amaze me how yall have all the information in front of you and yall still going to pay for this.

Laughable. And the people wonder why the opinion of the state is what it is.

I wish our state wouldn't bow to the cable/phone companies and do this. Chattanooga's local utility EPB wanted to bring high speed internet to the surrounding extremely rural areas outside it's service area for cheap, but no these a-hole companies bought and paid state congress to put in a law to stop them. Since you know we have been delivering the fastest residential internet to everyone in the service area since like 2010.

High speed internet can be done cheap and get access to everyone. No reason everyone on this side of the Mississippi shouldn't have access to at least a gig with no throttling for under $70 a month at this point except for a-holes in cable/phone companies blocking progress and being greedy a**hats.

Obama rolled out one of these programs too during his administration that totaled in the billions but nothing ever came of it. Most likely the same situation with this boondoggle, the money will get soaked up by administrative costs and fact-finding committees.

In our area, our city had worked funds to do just this thing. When it was announced, of course they were able to move those monies to other areas of need. Even sold the fiber.

Needless to say, 3 years later and nothing from the Feds when it comes to internet

LA could contract with Starlink for 1/10 of the price, get better service, and be done with the project in a quarter of the time, but no one gets greased in that scenario.

But then we’d have to support a rich man who offends people, and we can’t have that kind of unbearable burden from the past.

Yes, but starlink is available now, the government hasnt even done anything yet. Also the pricing can vary. Some people have to rent the equipment as it is from their isp.

You wait on your government's internet, ill go with whats already available.

Do you really think a $1.36 billion gov program is anything but a slush fund for the politically connected?

It’s funded by a $1.2 trillion federal gov “slush fund” Biden has had Mitch Landrieu running its implementation/spending. So obviously nothing to see here…

I am normally on the side that this is wasteful spending, but it is a grant. So might as well use it. Either we get the grant or some other state gets it.

So its wasteful spending by the feds then instead of wasteful spending by the state

Let’s do some math..

quote:

Previously, Louisiana obtained $172 million through the American Rescue Plan Act to bring broadband to 67,000 locations across the state, according to ConnectLA, the website for the Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity.

quote:

The program covering the remaining 140,000 locations is known as GUMBO 2.0.

So the original program was $172 million to serve 67,000 locations, at an average of $2,567 per location.

The new program is $1.36 billion to serve 140,000 locations, at an average of $9,714 per location.

But hey, we saved them $300 in Starlink setup costs.

You could install Starlink systems at all of those locations and subsidize the monthly cost down to $50/month for 15 years with that money.

LOL.

I cant wait to see what the total waste of money comes out to be and how shitty the service is since it is government and all.

Good luck.

Not available in my neighborhood unfortunately. I’m close to LSU.

Pretty annoying that my cell phone has more bandwidth than my home broadband.

But then politicians and associated business owners wouldn't have a $1.36 billion slush fund to grift money from. We can't have that.
