Louisiana panel signs off on $30M College Drive flyover in Baton Rouge -- 1 of 3 big projects

LINK

A key legislative panel Monday signed off on initial plans to build a $30 million flyover to College Drive from Interstate 10 west. The work will be done using a process called design/build, which employs a team of highway designers and builders in one step to speed construction.

Shawn Wilson, secretary for the state Department of Transportation and Development, said the process will allow work to be finished in 2023 rather than 2026. The proposal was approved by the joint House-Senate transportation committees.

The spending is part of a $380 million plan to widen I-10 from the "new" Mississippi River bridge to the I-10/12 split. The College Drive project and preliminary work around Acadian Thruway are among the first segments of the widening plan.

Motorists on I-10 west who want to exit at College Drive now have to cross three lanes to do so, including traffic merging onto I-10 from I-12 west.

The addition will allow travelers to rely on the flyover instead, and I-12 motorists will also have easier access to College Drive.

The work is being financed with federal bonds that will be repaid annually with a portion of federal aid for roads and bridges.

2026? bullshite.

By the time this is finished I will likely be retired.

That flyover likely means eminent domain over some of those shithole properties next to Wendy’s and you know that means a shakedown claiming racism.

It doesn't involve anything on that stretch. It's going to be built mostly within the existing I-10 right of way near the Marriott.

It's not worth the traffic headaches when they actually do it

The third project is aimed at improving access to Barksdale Air Force Base from I-20 near Shreveport.

Guess that was more important than a new bridge

I can't wait until they do the new bridge but when everyone gets across to Baton Rouge the current infrastructure won't be able to handle the capacity

this may be a dumb question, but what is a flyover? Are there any drawings?

My understanding is it’s like a Ferris wheel for cars. You get in before the split and it picks you up and over the road onto College. I haven’t seen any drawings though.

but what is a flyover?

An elevated ramp (usually an exit ramp) that goes over an existing road, usually to get to the road you intend to go to.

They had a design of it at the public meetings.
