Louisiana Politics Really Does Hurt The State And There Needs To Be A Change

While I think it sucks we voted on fantasy sports wagering in November, which passed in 47 parishes, and yesterday this happened.

It is bigger than this whole sports gambling situation. This is just an example of how this state is run.
If Louisiana would legalize gambling now, they can take advantage of being bordered to the 2nd most populated state in the country. Just like people are going to Mississippi to place bets, people in Texas would be flocking to Louisiana to place bets.
They add shite to a bill and it gets voted down because others don't want that part of the bill in it.. Putting it on the ballot this past fall was a waste of time. What the citizens want doesn't matter.

People will not be allowed to begin playing fantasy sports in Louisiana.
Nor will they be allowed to vote on whether to legalize betting on college and professional games.
Efforts to move forward with both forms of gambling failed on Thursday in Baton Rouge during the final chaotic minutes of the 2019 legislative session.
The unexpected development left bitter feelings between the Republican lawmakers from Jefferson Parish who pushed their competing gambling measures.
“We’re going to look like fools,” state Rep. Kirk Talbot, the sponsor of the fantasy sports measures, said in an interview.

People in 47 parishes voted in November to allow fantasy sports in their parishes, but they could not begin playing until the Legislature approved Talbot’s measures to establish the rules and the tax rate.
“Unfortunately, there’s another side of this building that doesn’t play by the rules,” state Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Metairie, told his Senate colleagues just before the clock hit 6 p.m. and the Legislature adjourned. “I don’t like the way I was treated.”
The abrupt ending followed a standoff between supporters of sports betting and fantasy sports throughout the day.

Our politicians are corrupt idiots. The voters already passed fantasy sports in the majority of the parishes. Screw the will of the people.

At least we have tailgates and gumbo though

Big money and special interests rule. That’s how it is, how it’s been, and how it’ll always be.

I’m tired of voting for politicians and being screwed over by all of them. No more politicians. Eddie Rispone for governor. Let’s change the game in this state

They will probably make a law to stop tailgating and illegal to cook gumbo.

Jefferson Parish mafia @ Catholic Church who controls the JP legislators could not let this happen because it would impact their illegal betting orations and Bingo!

Maybe we too can have taxes like Illinois, California or New York.

the 35th, 19th and 25th best states to live in respectively according to U.S. News and World Report, as opposed to the worst state in the union, Louisiana.
i don't understand how some of you fail to realize that you're bitching higher taxes in other states while you're living in the poorest, most fricked up state.

Switch Louisiana residents with any of those states and they'd be bottom 3 with very high taxes

Constitutional Convention controlled by true conservatives. That is the only answer.

except those taxes go to things like infrastructure and education, which are two of the biggest problems this state has.
you did get legislation banning products being labeled milk unless they come from a "hoofed mammal."

Meh. Bingo is pretty much dead. It's a big reason why the JP Carnival sucks so much now... they were so dependent on bingo to help offset the fact that they can't really charge high dues. Church bingos are pretty much dead also - outside of fairs.

We spend mid 20s on education per pupil and have low 40s ranked schools. More money won't improve that.

This isn't a party issue. Even in Washington. What really matters are special interest and lobbyist, it's just easier to manipulate in Louisiana.
It doesn't matter if the people vote in favor of something, if there is a special interest group who doesn't want what the people voted for, they find ways to get what they want.

And our taxes are much higher than people here like to acknowledge. They always knock CA for having high taxes, not realizing we get taxed to an oblivion as well.
