SB 134 Makes it harder to sue nursing homes for neglect.

The nursing home lobby is second only to oil and gas for political clout.

There are some weird lobbies out there that have amazing political power. In California, the prison guard union gives millions to candidates and PACs.

The controversial House Bill 673 would eliminate the state statute allowing for financial compensation of wrongfully convicted and later exonerated individuals.

The House Criminal Justice Committee advanced the bill on April 23rd, and it now heads to the full House for consideration.

Under the current law, the state allows for up to $40,000 per year for every year of wrongful incarceration.

So what is the recourse here? A slap on the back and a "we're sorry"? Pretty crazy IMO

HB 215- Exceptions to abortions
HB 674- Ethics board changes for politicians, essentially trying to exempt them from investigations

HB 581 Bans mass balloon releases

Someone must have watched a YouTube video on this balloon release in Cleveland in 1986 where they launched 1.5 million balloons.

Taking away taxes on these pro athletes is one step too far IMO. If they want to be Big Boys, they can pay taxes like the rest of us.

It needs to be something that every SEC state is on the same page with. So it’s sort of out of our control because if Alabama or Texas does it then Louisiana has to do it or we are put at a major disadvantage.

LSU football is a big economic engine for the state whether people want to admit it or not. People travel in and spend a lot of money to see a premier program compete at the highest level so whatever legislation needs done to ensure LSU is right there with the other big brands must be done.

If we are going to copy other states, this probably the last place to begin

Recruits are not looking at that. They're giving their agents 10-25%.

This administration and legislature are supposed to be trying to REMOVE exemptions to create a balanced tax strategy. Not subsidize entertainment.

quote:

McMakin said the measure is appropriate in light of the economic impact athletes have on the state. LSU athletics generated $500 million for the state in the 2021-22 academic year, according to a university study.

McMakin said if graduate assistants wanted to present evidence of their economic impact, he’ll “happily” add them to his bill. In 2022, LSU research, much of it done or assisted by graduate students, had a $1.3 billion economic impact.

Time to exempt grad students and student workers from income tax too then.

And those are behind the trial lawyers lobby. Or have you forgotten that we’ve lost countless companies because of bs lawsuits

This. They are so powerful so as to dictate some of the LDH appointments. Some really talented and knowledgeable programmatic folks have been passed over for outsiders from departments and careers not related to NF operations and regulation.

So money “ruined” College athletics but these college athletes are not looking at keeping more money in their pockets via tax exemptions?

Ok sure pal.

They're looking at the "salary" not the "take home pay".

As long as that “increase tax on tobacco and vapes” doesn’t include Zyns, I’m all for it.

It's the only one I am back and forth on.

Vaping/nicotine is gross, but ehhhh. Would the extra funds even truly go to what they're claiming? A "newly created program".. vague "cancer research". Not so sure here.
