It blows my mind that in 2021 power lines can’t be treated to withstand such a mild ice event.

Is there much of a wind threat for the BR area this afternoon? I have a live oak that the ice did a number on and I’m worried wind could do it in. Got a guy who’s supposed to be able to come look to cut it tomorrow

I think some of the Thunderstorms have to the potential to be severe...

Thanks man. Really appreciate the tip.

I've turned it back on. I figure it's other fine or not and either way works for me. The unit is at replacement age anyway. Not sure if that's the best way to look at it

ETA it was definitely defrost stage. Fan is spinning now

We have to be getting close to 12 inches so far. It’s getting ridiculous.

Looks like the severe potential is a small area near the coast (where I am). Guess it is still too cold farther north.

BTW anyone know why I was still getting heat from that unit. If this were to happen with AC running I would have gotten nothing and noticed the problem sooner.

Or was I in Aux/defrost or something and fine?

AC/heat pump units have auxiliary heating on the inside unit, which just consists of some sort of electrified strips that heat the air as it passes along them.

Heat pumps only work well when there is sufficient heat in the outside air. At some point of declining temps, it will switch over to "aux" mode, and the outside unit will shut off.

There is such a thing as a geothermal heat pump which can work in colder climates, but AC/heat pump units only make sense in warm climates like what ours used to be.

In my experience, aux mode doesn't provide very much heat, but then again, that was a 25 year old unit.
I've since replaced with a propane furnace, and I will never go back to a heat pump.

Ya my experience with AUX so far is similar and also for this unit, it is old.

I will look into what can be done. I replaced a unit last spring and didn't even think of an alternative.

With how difficult some areas of my.house have been to heat I'm less than thrilled with the performance but also realize this was a rare event.

At 26 degrees and 0.25 ice accumulation on trees in Southern Bienville Parish, freezing rain falling steadily. Power flickered about 30 minutes ago. Have generator ready to go.
