Seems proportional to cost of living as well. Yes the south is poor, but, our dollar goes a lot further than Hawaii, California, Maine, etc...

Those numbers seem waaaay too low. How can someone in Colorado, where an outhouse sometimes is worth $1MM, have such a low net worth? This just doesn't add up.

When you average in places like Ferriday, North Baton Rouge, the 9th ward, Shreveport..... It kinda pulls the average down.

Sure, but all of these states have really poor areas. If you remove the delta and Jackson proper MS’s average goes way up. West Virginia’s McDowell county has nearly 40% at or below the poverty rate. Southeast Arkansas (counties along the river) is pulling down their average in the same way.

Net worth is only one part of the equation you also have to look at cost of living.

You can actually have a lower net worth but a higher standard of living if your cost of living is low enough.

Because they are mortgaged up to their eyeballs with no equity to afford that outhouse. Simple

When I see the MHIs in certain states, I feel like my wife and I are rich compared to the average MHI of most states, however, I don't feel rich.

Colorado has a one of highest means in the country, so a large % of renters and low income folks worth effectively zero, with another large % of upper middle class and upper class with a lot of equity.

I'm higher than the avg. Hawaiian (#1), and I live in Louisiana.

Assets owned - Liabilities = Net Worth

They probably owe a shite ton on their mortgages.

Hard to believe

Alabama and Mississippi have zero billionaires

Mississippi and Alabama have no international airports

I’m fine with them believing this because the fewer carpet baggers we can have the better.

It’s hilarious how many more responses a negative thread will get. LA is continuing to bring in industrial and manufacturing work.

The south in general is not going to be very high on these lists. Our poor are extremely poor and are a decent chunk of population.

He just laughed and said "let's go get some cracklins" .

Land value is a major factor in net worth.

I love Louisiana. Really do. Lived all over the U.S. and some internationally. Would not have raised family, especially during most formidable years, in any other place on Earth. Family, food, football and fun are central features of soul and culture as far as I am concerned (vs my experience w/“elsewhere” that is mass merchandised / synthesized - places that turn my soul into raisins in my experience.

That said, when I say “Louisiana”, I mean South Louisiana. When I say “South Louisiana”, I mean a sprinkling of Nola / Northshore and parts of Baton Rouge / River Parishes / Lafayette. When I speak to those parts, I am speaking to the people and laughter, dancing, enjoying music and life together. Focus is so not net worth building as central tenet of what life is for and about.

With that good comes a chunk of racism, ignorance, limited vision to parish borders and insular universes, nil value to education and government effectiveness - that can drive one crazy.

So I focus on the good. And have been blessed to build a rich net worth in an organic place full of soul enriching abundance, with all due respect to this net worth list that I would argue is wrong measure of what life is about. Low net worth might even be essential, in some regards, to being soul enriching.

No.

The reason the South lost the war is because they were not nearly as industrialized as the North. The poverty preceded the Civil War.

Not to sound too horrible... but are there white adjusted versions of these stats available? Just curious how the south compares to other rural states in the midwest really.
