I think the pressure is on the wrong actors in this situation. Those selling benefits are the ones that should be facing major jail time.

It isn't all about the bribery. They donated money to a fake charitable organization, which in turn used the money for the bribes. BUT, considering they "donated" $500k to it, they then pretty much claimed it as a donation on their tax returns and it lowered their taxes due. Hence, Money Laundering, or I honestly see tax evasion.

The tax evasion part is legit and they should get time for that.

I don't think she'll get any prison time TBH

unless a rabbit is pulled out of a hat (and this isn't state court so that's close to 0%) at trial, she's going away

it seems that the initial charges were just the tip and they were given the option to plea or face new charges. huffman pled (and is going to get a minimal sentence that may not include jail time) to avoid this. laughlin/Mossimo rejected the offer and got the full fury of fedgov upon their faces

at this point, they're fricked

Did the Manships receive any benefits from donating money for the journalism school?

It boggles the mind that someone would do all this just to gain their kid admission to USC. The kid could have gone a lot of places and got a good education

It isn't about the education with USC here, is about the crowd and saying in the clique.

So we can expect Jussie Smollett to be hit with mail fraud charges any day now for mailing white powder to himself, right?

What am I missing? What is so special about USC that their daughter couldn't get into any other school? Seems really dumb all the way around.

dis may have been addressed before, but, where are the charges on the university and/or university representatives for engaging in such activities and accepting such bribes...

They were all charged together. The administration folks are probably going to be hit with fraud, but the tax evasion charges likely don't apply.

It's damned sure a kissing cousin if old Baboo Manship, with a 1.8 GPA, got into LSU with any special consideration. Not saying this happened, or that Baboo exists.

That's what happens when you try to skirt the system.

Zero sympathy from me

I love how forgiving most of you are of the uber wealthy outright bribing a university athletics official to guarantee admission for their average intelligence spawn. They could have donated millions to USC. The problem is, that's no 100% guarantee of admission. So Loughlin and her husband participated in a scheme to fake an athletic recruit profile for their daughters and bribe the athletics official to use their influence. At a school with an 11% admit rate (even lower factoring in legit athletes, legacies, etc...), that's essentially stealing an admissions spot from someone more deserving, as well as tax fraud, etc... This is high profile stuff. The prosecutor is not going to let her skate with community service when co-defendants like Huffman are pleading guilty and apologizing while Loughlin refuses to accept responsibility for her actions.

I dont get the illegality of her actions. How is it laundering, or mail fraud, etc
Those charges seem to be tied to the person receiving the money.

If i say, hey LSU, heres 20 million, i want my son in school,

how is that illegal? It seems the laundering, fraud, etc would bo in the actions of the person who does something wrong to make my request happen.

That was really stupid to not be contrite and take the original plea. It is a white collar crime, she would have gotten a easy ride. You don't mess with the Feds. She will find out.
