Looks like we have a new case of stolen valor

In his first run for Congress, Cotton leaned heavily on his military service, claiming to have been "a U.S. Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan," and, in a campaign ad, to have "volunteered to be an Army Ranger." In reality, Cotton was never part of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the elite unit that plans and conducts joint special military operations as part of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Rather, Cotton attended the Ranger School, a two-month-long, small-unit tactical infantry course that literally anyone in the military is eligible attend. Soldiers who complete the course earn the right to wear the Ranger tab — a small arch that reads "Ranger" — but in the eyes of the military, that does not make them an actual Army Ranger.
quote:
Yet Cotton told the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record in February 2012: "My experience as a U.S. Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan and my experience in business will put me in very good condition." The year before, he told Roby Brock of Talk Politics in a video interview that he "became an infantry officer and an Army Ranger." A Cotton campaign ad placed in the Madison County Record in May 2012 identifies Cotton as a "Battle-Tested Leader" who "Volunteered to be an Army Ranger."

Sounds just like JBE. I wouldn’t call it stolen valor but he knew exactly what he was doing

So basically he’s the Republican version of Richard Blumenthal
Posted on 1/23/21 at 9:32 am to RedRifle
Hmmm, I can see how it's slightly misleading but this isn't egregious at all for a politician. Let me know when these people start caring about Elizabeth Warren claiming Native American heritage for multiple decades to get a job at Harvard and pander as a politician.

Playing fast and loose with the terminology

I do not like it. Arkansas has other people to pick.
I wonder how hard Salon has ever looked at Richard Blumenthal, whose transgression is 1000 times worse. Is Salon saying he is unfit, too?

This guy is an idiot, but this also seems really dumb.

Loved this boom from TC's staffer tho. Suck it Salon
quote:
Caroline Tabler told Salon in an email, "Senator Cotton graduated from Ranger school and is more of a Ranger than a Salon reporter like you will ever be."

People in Arkansas either love or despise Cotton. There is no true middle ground. He is trying to position himself as the powerful Republican candidate down the road.

Do people really have a problem with someone who earned a "Ranger" tab being called an "Army Ranger?" I have never been exposed to this point of view before, and it seems wrong to me.
Sure, "anyone in the Army" is eligible to attend Ranger school. They've got to actually complete the training to get the tab, and the tab by any name is very prestigious.

Wow I didn’t even see that it was a Salon article
I should’ve clicked the link
In that case, this is most likely fake news

I think Dick said he went to Vietnam when he never did.
Did Cotton go to a combat zone or not?

Hmmm... this kinda a stretch... more untrue than true... I could have attended after AIT chose not to

Yeah, they make it sound like you just show up, play in the woods for a few months, then get your tab

In May 2006, Cotton was deployed to Baghdad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as a platoon leader with the 101st Airborne Division. In Iraq, he led a 41-man air assault infantry platoon in the 506th Infantry Regiment, and planned and performed daily combat patrols.[11] After completing his first tour of duty, in December 2006 Cotton was promoted to first lieutenant and re-assigned as a platoon leader for the 3d Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia.[12] In October 2008, Cotton was deployed to eastern Afghanistan. He was assigned within the Train Advise Assist Command – East at its Gamberi forward operating base (FOB) in Laghman Province as the Operations Officer of a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), where he planned daily counter-insurgency and reconstruction operations.[11] His 11-month deployment ended on July 20, 2009, and he returned from Afghanistan.[11]
That’s a yes.
Whether he deployed as a ranger or not, he deployed and graduated from Ranger School.
I’ll take Cotton over Blumenthall.

What an idiot. I know that was in 2012, but even then you couldn't just put shite out there and at some point it will not come back to haunt you.

2012?
Dems are digging deep here.
Bless their hearts.
Salon should be embarrassed.
I’m sure he’s evolved into a Ranger by now.
